Chapter 1
The Night Class at Cross Academy
When arriving at the academy, the first thing to notice is the gates that are to protect its students. The gates reveal an enormous forest on the left and right, and up ahead the walkway is Cross Academy itself. The academy was so huge that it would be compared to a castle. There are three buildings in this school; the school, the Day class dorms, and Night class dorms. The Night class for the special students with high marks in their testing to get into this academy, but there are more secrets in this school that meet the eye.
"It's curfew time for everybody in the day class, so just go back to your dorms!"
There was a girl shouting at a big crowd filled with girls that were blocking the entryway for the Night dorms. She has red/dark brown hair, shoulder length, brownish/red eyes that portrays innocents, and a day class uniform. The Day class uniform colors are black and white with a red ribbon for the girl's uniform. That is to help us prefect of what class each student are in. This prefect is named Yuuki Kurosu. She is a first-year prefect in the day class and the Chairman's adopted daughter.
We keep the Day class as far away from the Night class as much as possible because they are unbelievably gorgeous. I spotted the popular students of the Night class; Senri Shiki, Hanabusa Aido, Takuma Ichijo, Ruka Souen, Rima Toya, Akatsuki Kain, and finally... Kaname Kuran. The fact about these vampires is they have a chart system to distinguish themselves. The very top is known as Level A or otherwise known as Purebloods. Their blood is to be known of having the purest and sweetest blood. Their appearance is nothing compared to normal vampires and is the other vampire's leaders. Then, we have the Level B, or aristocrat vampires. The Aristocrat vampires are born as vampires but were born to serve the Pureblood with their powers they gained. Each Aristocrat is gorgeous and flawless but is still servants to the Pureblood they choose to serve. Level C are vampires that are common with no powers of their own. Level D are humans turned into a vampire by only a Pureblood. These vampires slowly will turn into Level E, the lowest scale that has not made to the system, but the only way to prevent this is to drink the blood of the person that bit them. Once they drink the blood, they will be stable enough to be a Level D or a Level C.
I was walking out of the forest to help Yuuki with these crazy girls when I noticed Kaname helping her instead. His gaze, while talking and staring at Yuuki, was full of gentleness that no normal Pureblood would give to a human girl. He patted Yuuki's head for a small pink blush was shown but a man with silky silver hair, snowy-white skin, and lavender eyes grabbed on to Kaname's wrist removed it. His name is Zero Kiriyuu and he is a first-year prefect. The tension in the air between Zero and Kaname was unbearable and made everyone uncomfortable. I had to be the one to snap them out of it so I decided to cut in with my hands to be clapped.
The attention was soon on me as I spoke up, "Alright you two. That is enough. The tension between you two is bad enough but now it is getting uncomfortable. Kuran, I suggest you and the others go to class immediately or must I speak with the Chairman about this encounter again."
My voice was threatening for Zero to let go of Kaname's wrist, Yuuki to flinch from scared at this, and Kaname was only staring at me with an unreadable expression. My green eyes connected with his brown/red ones but ended when he first turned away and walked to the others.
"Always so cold," Kaname glanced at me to smirk, "My little Mei."
An anger mark appeared on my forehead as I was ready to punch that stupid smirk off his face. Yuuki had to hold me back because she knew I would definitely hit him without a second thought. He was so annoying and irritating that I wanted so badly that looking at him set me off. They were walking to their Night Class but I was shouted out at Kaname's back.
"What did you call me?! I dare you to say that again, bastard!" I grumbled angrily.
"Mei!" Yuuki yelled at me for calling him that.
"Mei," Zero spoke up, "Don't forget who you are dealing with right now."
I nodded my head in understanding for my glare to still be Kaname's back. My gaze on Kaname's back was interrupted when a white uniform with black strips was in front of me.
"Mei."
Yuuki quickly let me go surprised to see one of the vampires in front of me and calling my name. My balance was off to bump into the Night students chest for my eyes to widen. I stared up at the most beautiful lightly-tinted blue eyes and never shows any expression.
"Shiki? Is something wrong?" I questioned.
He puts his hands on my shoulders to straighten me up replying, "You shouldn't call our leader such name. You will get hurt by others." His gaze turned to look at the other vampires behind him.
I was able to spot Aido and Ruka having their eyes glow red at my direction. Zero was readying his gun, Yuuki had her hand on Artemis, and Shiki's hand was still on my shoulder. He patted my head to walk back with everyone to slap Aido's arm and used Akatsuki to push Ruka away. They were both complaining but I was too busy touching my head from the pat Shiki did.
"If I didn't know any better Mei. I say you are in love with Shiki-senpai?" Yuuki comment, having me snap out of my state.
"Huh?! Don't think like that Yuuki! You know Shiki was the first friend I made when this school begin!" I replied angrily.
Yuuki chuckled at my frustration while Zero was yelling at the Day students to get to their dorms. In the end, it was a job that I wished the Day girls would get smarter and not give us headaches.
"This is ridiculous," Zero states blankly, then slams the Chairman's, or Kain Kurosu, desk angrily, "How can you possibly expect just the three of us to guard the whole bunch of those bloodsuckers and deal with the screaming idiots?!"
"I admit that it is difficult to deal with every night," Chairman admits, guilty for us working so hard.
"So find someone else to help me before this whole thing implodes!" He points to Yuuki insulting her for being useless, and points to me, "and you keep taking Mei for little meetings that aren't actually meetings at all! You just want to check on your daughter on every chance you get!"
Kain sipped on his tea to reply, "Impossible. The role of the guardians is critical... if the day class and the night class are to successfully co-exist. You three are the only ones I can trust. Besides..." Kain sighs, "It's a thankless job, with long hours, sleepless nights, and no respect. No one else would take it. And... I know that my adorable daughters and loving son won't let me down."
Zero got so angry that he slammed the desk to break it in a half. Yuuki and I sweat drop because we figured that Kain would take it too far. Zero is grateful for the care that Kain did but he is originally the proud son of two famous hunters. Zero was raised to become a vampire hunter like his family but his deep hatred for vampires had things done to his family.
"Mei, can't you do something about this. I can't continue doing this with Yuuki alone," Zero asked tiredly.
As much as I want to deny it, he isn't totally wrong. Zero was trained as a Vampire Hunter since birth while Yuuki had no recollection of any memory. She wasn't really trained to deal with them. It didn't help me either working with Yuuki because I was raised in the arts of a hunter. Kain was an ex-hunter but trained me the moment I could walk. I stared at Kain for him to just smile at me. We were having a stare down for me to sigh in defeat.
Zero got upset and left the room getting annoyed with us and Yuuki jumped out of the window. Kain and I were left alone for a book to be slammed on Kain's desk. I flinched to notice that Kain was getting angry staring at me and recognize the books.
"Are you trying to find something out, my daughter?" Kain questioned angrily.
I knew that Kain when getting upset when he finds out about this book. This book is the information about all hunters and ex-hunters. I might have been raised since birth by Kain but we are not blood-related. Kain found me in front of his door on a very dark night with snow slowly falling down. He told me that I was wrapped in a warm blanket and a note saying 'take care of her'. Is it so bad to find out where I'm from?
Morning
Morning rolled around with the normal Yuuki and Zero snoring in the class. This would always annoy the teachers but I would ask the teacher to dismiss since I would punish them later. The teachers would allow it on special occasions, which is all the time because I was one of their special students and would teach Zero and Yuuki out of classes. Granted, my teachings still didn't help Yuuki get any smarter since she doesn't pay attention.
"Yuuki, you stay up all night and sleeping all day. That's something only a vampire would do," a girl sitting next to Yuuki said.
The girl next Yuuki is Sayori Wakaba but we call her Yori for short. She is a petite slender build girl, like Yuuki, with light brown hair, big hazel eyes, and is very cute. Though, she would deny it all the time I compliment her with it. Yori glanced over at me to her right glancing at me waving with a small smile. Yori and I didn't talk much but we would talk about how we are doing in school and talk for hours about the gossips going on. She is a very sweet girl and I'm very lucky to call her my friend.
Every student left the class besides me, Yuuki, and Zero. Yuuki and Zero were finally wide awake for me to teach them what we learned in class. Though, Yuuki was very against this because she would get up, lean against my back, and put her arms on my shoulders.
"Mei, I don't want to study. I'm so tired," Yuuki whines like a child.
I pat her head softly without saying anything for her to get comfy on my back. She would sometimes fall asleep on my back, and I allowed it. I'm a real softy when it comes to my sister.
"You shouldn't spoil her so much," Zero spoke up from behind us.
Yuuki didn't bother to glance at him because she knew he was gonna make a mean comment. When these two get into an argument, their reactions are so funny to watch and entertaining.
"You know I'm softy sometimes Zero. Especially to my family that I love very much. Besides, what sister wouldn't want to spoil their siblings," I commented, continuing to rub her head.
Zero sighs with a 'whatever' and I had to softly wake up Yuuki from her slumber to sit down and begin my teachings. Zero is incredibly smart so it was easier for me to have him understand, while Yuuki was very tricky. She got the formulas for math down but would use the wrong ones in the equations. Her English needs work but nobody is perfect in that department.
Soon, the night as we did our studying session and the first time I get to finally be on time to help Yuuki and Zero. The night class got to their class, and the day the class got to their dorms. We were now watching the academy grounds in front of the night class windows. I was getting quite bored from doing this that I was hoping someone would start talking.
"So how is Kaname Kuran, your hero, doing tonight?" Zero spoke up, making me laugh and Yuuki shocked.
"It-it-it-it-it's not like I was only looking at Kaname or anything!" Yuuki replies flabbergasted. She turns away from the night class window to stare down at the academy grounds, "Everyone in the night class is behaving themselves perfectly tonight! And it doesn't look like anyone from the day class is wandering around either!"
Yuuki was trying hard to convince us that she wasn't staring at Kaname but we all knew the truth. 10 years ago, on a snowy night, Yuuki was brought to Kain's home with a smaller version of Kaname. Yuuki has no memories before that snowy night beside a vampire attacking thirsty for blood and Kaname saving her. It was the same night that I met her and the bastard prince himself, Kaname.
I can't believe I ever thought he was handsome back then.
I glanced over at Zero to remember when he first arrived at our house too. Four years ago, he was brought into the house wearing ripped up clothing, a jacket too big for him, and expression so filled with hatred.
"Geez..." Yuuki sighs snapping me out of my thoughts, "Looks like some Day students are breaking curfew again..."
She jumped down from her post to take care of the students. I was going to follow her but Zero grabbed my wrist to stop me.
"Zero?"
"The question wasn't just for Yuuki, you know," Zero commented. My eyes widen as he continues, "I know for a fact that you use to have a crush on him too. You want to act tough and feel hatred towards him but you hide your feelin-"
I stopped Zero to cover his mouth glaring at him angrily, "Don't try to understand me Zero. You must understand that I feel intense hatred for Kaname Kuran. He is a manipulative and lying bastard that keeps so many secrets to save his own skin. The way he talks to you... the way he acts like your an abomination..." I looked up at Zero filled with hatred, "I'll make him regret looking at you like that."
Zero eyes widen to let go of my wrist to continue staring at the hatred in my eyes. I removed my hand from his mouth for a scream of vampires to be heard down in the forest.
"Yuuki!"
I jumped down from my post to land on the ground, running straight to the sound of yelling and the scent of blood in the air. My bracelet was shinning a bright light for a white bow to form and pulled the string back revealing a purple arrow to form. Yuuki was being held by Aidou with her blood down his chin from her hand, two Day students passed out, and Akatsuki was just watching.
"Mei!" Yuuki shouted surprised.
"Release Yuuki this instant, otherwise I will not hesitate to shoot," I threatened for Aidou to get upset.
Aidou let go of Yuuki to lick his lips staring at me hungrily, "I do wonder. What would your blood taste like Mei? It must taste sweeter than it smells. Can I have a taste?"
I narrowed my eyes at him to pull the string back, even more, readying my target. Then I felt a chain rattling with a silver color appearing in the corner of my eye.
"You better be careful Aidou, otherwise my partner here will not be afraid to shoot. I do not think that I will be able to stop him."
"Idiots! Do not shoot!" Yuuki shouted, having our arms moved away from Aidou and hit a tree.
I glared down at Yuuki to scream angrily at her, "Are you that fucking stupid?!" Yuuki flinched surprised, "Why the hell did you move my arms when I could have to shoot you in the process!? Would you think with your brain for once your damn life!?"
"M-mei..." Yuuki flinched scared and surprised.
For 10 years, I have never screamed or cussed at Yuuki this much till now. She angered me so much that I didn't notice the tears coming down her cheeks, or the surprise looks of everyone including Kaname.
"I... I'm so sorry..." Yuuki spoke shaking.
Her apologize was not enough for me to forgive. She has always been the type of girl that has been gotten everything handed to her in a silver platter. Her obliviousness to everything makes me want to tell her the truth of everything. Before I can continue speaking, Zero covered my mouth and eyes to have me calm down.
"Mei... don't let your emotions get all wield up. Yuuki is not hurt. She is safe and standing in front of her. Breathe and look at her closely," Zero whispered softly in my ear.
He released me from his hand to have my sight from the blood-stained everywhere crying Yuuki to the normal, no blood crying Yuuki. My breathing calmed down as I realized that the visions were taking over me at that moment.
"Yuuki... just please... don't do this... again..." I released my weapon, the Sagittarius bow, and arrow back into a small bracelet.
I walked away from the scene with Yuuki shouting after me but I ignored her anyway. These visions that I have mainly come true in the end. Yuuki's future will be covered with bloodshed but I already knew that anyway. People know me as Mei Kurosu here, but my original name is Anastasia Davis, or should I say was. The reason behind this isn't because I wished on a star, or sucked into a portal, or made a deal with a devil. The simple and common reason for me being here is because...
...I died...
Anastasia Davis died at 14 years old a heavy stage of cancer. It felt like just yesterday that I was closing my eyes to sleep happily and peacefully, then wake up with snow all around and unable to move. From then on, I realized that I will never regret a decision and choices.
