"WHAT ARE YOU? SOME SORT OF INCOMPETENT HILLBILLY? HELL! THE MONKEYS NASA SEND INTO SPACE COULD DO A BETTER JOB THAN YOU! LEAVE THE TOUCHING TO THOSE WHO KNOW HOW TO TOUCH."
"I'm touched."
"Glad I was able to touch…" Rodney trailed off as he turned around to see who was speaking to him. The Tech he had been screaming at ran off, practically shaking in his snow boots. Damn it was cold in Antarctica but unless he was mistaken, it had just rose a few degrees…a few hundred.
"Let me guess, you're Dr. McKay? They warned me about you." She said with a smile that Rodney believed to be a Health Hazard, after all, they were surrounded by ice and that smile could melt it.
"Oh really, what exactly did they say?" He asked, smiling tightly and looking around to make sure no one who wasn't a qualified toucher was touching. His grumpy mood suddenly vanished with one look at her dazzling green eyes.
"Oh arrogant, short-tempered, egotistical, womaniser but they also assured me that you were a brilliant scientist and I have many, many reports, reviews and published articles to back that up. As for the bad stuff, well, you and I will be working closely together for the next year so I'll make those decisions for myself."
Hey, I wouldn't mind working close with you, at all. He thought to himself, cheekily but somehow, thoughts of that nature, or that degraded this woman in anyway wouldn't stick in his mind. She exuded a sort of friendliness and calm he had never seen in anyone else before and he found it…he didn't know what he found because he had never found anything like it before.
"Weir." She said, extending an ungloved hand. "Dr. Elizabeth Weir, but feel free to call me Elizabeth. I think Dr. Weir is just to impersonal and sounds like the name of a plumbing company." Rodney tugged off his thick, grey glove and took her hand, shaking it firmly. Her skin was so smooth, so warm. He found himself relishing the feel of her hand, his fingers flexing along the smooth skin of the back of her hand.
"Call me Rodney because…well you just asked me to call you Elizabeth and I don't want to be impolite to the boss on my first day. PUT THAT DOWN!" Elizabeth turned to see who he was shouting at and saw several Marines who were in the process of moving a large metal box. "Do you have ANY idea how sensitive that equipment is, one bump and BOOM!" He clapped his hands together to emphasis his point before rushing over to the Marines.
Elizabeth found herself smiling at the new scientist who was in the process of scolding eleven, six foot tall, solidly built men. Considering the fact he was a whole head shorter than they were and a lot less…shall we say muscular, it was a sight to behold.
"Penny for your thoughts, Doc?" Peter Grodin asked, coming up behind her with a smile on his face.
"I have a feeling things have just gotten a lot more interesting around here."

A/N: Just under 600 words, officially the shortest thing I have ever written. This was the start to the Scientist originally but I took it out for a different fic called Take My Hand but I felt it didn't fit in (even though it was the first paragraph(?)) so I decided to put it on its own. There really just isn't enough pre-rising stuff out there and I thought it would be interesting to speculate on their first meeting. Feel free to send feed back and tell me what you think. It's only a blue - purple button away!
