"Everything Charlotte says is a lie…"

Charlotte McAdams still heard that saying after a year. Now, sitting in her freshman English class at 1:34 pm, at Walter Mondale High School – yes, Appleton certainly had a thing for unknown politicians– of Appleton, Indiana, she still heard those words. Behind her, Cassie was leaning across the small isle way in an attempt to chat with Kendra and get away from her weird desk mate, a girl with mousy blonde hair named Jules. Kendra whispered something about Simon and Molly – surely that couldn't be true – and the pair of them giggled and whispered. Brett had his arm resting on Kendra's left shoulder, a blank look on his face as he attempted to listen to Miss Macmillan's lecture on imperfect tenses.

Turning back around in her seat again, Charlotte played with one of the dark brown curls framing her face. "Hey guys, 'watcha talking about?"

Kendra and Molly looked to each other. Brett rolled his eyes. Finally Kendra spoke up. "Um, Char… I'm sorry. I can't tell you. It's a secret – Molly told me not to tell anyone!" At least Kendra attempted to sound apologetic for keeping this news from me.

I looked at her, and asked quietly, "Then why are you telling Cassie about it, hm?"

She looked to Cassie and Brett, attempting to beg for a silent explanation. Cassie ignored the look and went back to doodling all over her notes. Brett kept his glazed expression intact and acted as if he hadn't heard me.

"Well, Charlotte, I can't tell you because… Because… Because Molly thinks you're a horrible blabbermouth after what happened last year. And I can't help but kind of agree with her! All that stuff about me and Evan getting to 'third base' and going 'under the bleachers'… Well, my mom was not happy. She made me sign a friggin' virginity pledge to assure her I wasn't 'up' to anything." Brett broke his mask of boredom and looked at me.

"Yeah, Charlotte. Thanks. Now all Mrs. Quaker does is make sure we don't kiss or anything… Because she's a good girl! She doesn't do that!" He mimicked a high-pitched, semi-whiny and scolding tone. "Her mom might make her quit cheer if we even go to the movies without a chaperone!"

My jaw almost dropped, and I turned around in my seat, a bit stunned with what had just happened. Kendra Quaker, quit cheer? She was great – the front-runner for a homecoming princess this year. And she had Brett too… Dear God, I could see why Mrs. Quaker was nervous.

"It's a lie! It's a lie! It's all just a lie, guys. Charlotte made it up."

That was courtesy of Malcolm, who sat behind Brett and was busy attempting to kiss Brett's butt to know what was really going on. "You can't just believe Charlotte anymore. After all she's done. Lies, cheating, even saying you couldn't get Kendra, Brett. I mean really, that chick's got the hugest mouth I've ever seen!"

I waited for someone to stand up for me – Kendra, Cassie, maybe even Eddie or Brett.

But all I got was laughter.
