A Duck called Ugly.

Once upon a time on an old farm,

a mother duck awoke with quite an alarm,

for underneath her feathers she could hear a few peeps,

feel a couple of wriggles and a one random screech.

Six gorgeous ducklings the colour of gold

arose from their warm nest into the cold.

But still there was one too frightened to come out,

so with one final shove he emerged with a pout.

But this duckling wasn't a duck at all,

his feathers were grey and he was much too tall,

his abnormal feet and his much too large head,

meant he wasn't normal, but ugly instead.

"How did this happen, what has gone wrong?

I thought he was different but I left it too long!

What will I do with such an ugly chick?

Oh dear, I sure hope he will leave the farm quick!"

Mother duck was ashamed of poor little Ugly,

The other ducks teased him because they were cuddly.

But in secret Mother Duck loved him greatly,

But the comments from neighbours were taunting and hating.

It did not matter that he was top swimmer,

the best at flying and by far he was thinner.

Ugly guessed no-one loved him so finally one day,

fed up to the max, he ran away.

He half flew and half ran out of the barn,

across the cornfields and away from the farm.

Swam over the pond and crept under the bridge,

crossed the busy road and flopped over the ridge.

After the adventure of that afternoon,

he was very tired and needed warmth soon.

And as he saw the last of the sun disappear,

he spotted a shack and entered with fear.

I guess was around this time,

when Mother Duck just could not find,

a reason that Ugly would have run away.

"He's been kidnapped!" was all she could say.

She ran outside in a panicking mess,

and to all the animals she had to confess,

that little Ugly had been taken away,

by who, and where, she could not say.

So a Search and Rescue mission began,

All the bird flew up high to scan,

And all the farmyard animals pitched in,

while Ugly was almost scared out of his skin.

Inside the shack it was mouldy and dusty,

It was full of cobwebs and smelt very musty.

And at the back in a rickety chair,

A very old lady was sitting there.

When she saw him she smiled a toothless grin,

She got up from her chair and beckoned him in.

"Well, well, well, what do we have here?"

She picked him up, he was trembling with fear.

She shoved him hard into a small hutch,

"Now you stay there, and lay a big clutch!"

But of course little Ugly was a male,

And the thought of the scary old lady prevailed,

And in the night he quietly escaped,

He fled from there quickly but soon collapsed.

He woke up next morning cold and weak,

He thought of his future and he knew it was bleak.

And as Death was knocking on Ugly's door,

A familiar duck quacked, there were animals galore!

Mum scooped him up and flew him back.

"I'm glad you're OK, and I should tell you that,

you are not a duck, no, no, not you,

you are a swan and a handsome one too!"

He looked in a puddle and was happy to see,

That he was handsome and he honked with glee.

And high above him some fellow swans called,

He hugged his mother and off he soared.

Away they glided into the sun,

And now-handsome Ugly's new life has begun.

It just goes to people may think you look fugly,

But life turned out sweetly for my for a duck they called Ugly.

The End
