Chapter 1
The bright yellow sun was rising over the expansive region of Kalos. A ray of sunshine peeked in through a young man's bedroom window. The brown-haired boy was stirred by the light in his face. Rather than making a start to his day, he simply rolled onto his side to continue his sleep. After about half an hour, his slumber was rudely interrupted by a cawing bird Pokémon in a nearby tree. It was a small Pidgey playing the role of a rooster.
"Alright, I'm up, I'm up..." the youth blurted out following a big yawn. He wasn't looking forward to waking up. Almost as if on cue, the boy's mother called up the stairs. "Calem, are you still not up yet? You're supposed to meet up with your friends this morning, remember?"
"Oh yeah! I almost forgot!" The boy named Calem shot up instantly, clambering to his feet. He quickly ran over to his dresser, pulling out his clothes for the day. Soon they were spread out on the desk nearby. Calem slipped out of his pajamas, tossing them lazily onto his bed. He pulled a pair of navy jeans up to his waist, zipping them up afterward. Then the boy dressed his torso with an aqua sweatshirt.
The medium-sized teenager ran over to the stairs, about to descend them when he quickly spun around. "Oh right! Almost forgot something else." He wandered over to his desk chair, which had a two-toned black and blue bag on the seat with a red cap on top of it. Calem placed the cap on his head. Then he pulled a pair of sunglasses out of the bag, laying them on the brim of his cap. The bag's single strap was soon draped over his shoulder.
Calem was finally ready to leave. He sprinted down the steps, waving goodbye to his mom before dashing out the door. The boy stopped just before reaching the yard's gate. In all the rush, Calem forgot to put on shoes. Luckily he had a pair in his bag just in case. Black boots emerged out of one of the compartments. He slipped his feet in them, leaning down to tie the laces.
"Calem-kun!" Two girls called over to him in unison.
Calem glanced up at them with curious brown orbs, still hunched over from tying his laces. One of the girls was a brunette with her hair in multiple pigtails. She also sported a pink T-shirt and a pair of denim shorts. Her shoes were the same color as her shirt. The other girl was blonde with her shoulder length hair flowing out of a hat matching Calem's. She wore a black top and a red skirt along with black boots. Both of them were about the same height as the boy.
The brown-haired boy glanced at the brunette before his gaze went to the blonde. "Ah. Hey, Shauna, Serena." Calem took his time straightening up. His sense of urgency suddenly disappeared with the girls' appearance.
"We thought you forgot about our little meeting in the next town over. We've been waiting for awhile now!" Shauna said with an annoyed look on her normally cute face.
"Shauna and I decided to come get you. Now hurry up! Tierno and Trevor are waiting for us to return," Serena added in. She adjusted her hat after doing so.
"Heh, sorry. I kinda overslept." Calem laughed nervously, rubbing the back of his neck.
"You're just lazy, neighbor."
"No I'm not, Serena!"
"You two can argue later! Let's go!" Shauna grabbed each of their wrists, dragging her friends off to the gate leading out of the small town of Vaniville.
