Replace the Face
Inuyasha one-shot
She was leading them along, she knew that and she was almost certain that the both of them knew it as well. It hadn't been her intention to harm anyone but she couldn't help but blame herself when she saw Kouga's wolfish smirk falter, or noticed a look of sad understanding swim into Houjo's usually cheerful eyes.
Perhaps she would have been able to let them go if it wasn't for the fact that the two of them… they both… together they encompassed every thing she saw in him.
Kouga's strength, his bravery and his arrogance. Every quality Kouga displayed, she had already found elsewhere. Kouga was a portrait of everything she wanted, and he made it more then obvious that he wanted her.
Houjo. Kind, loving, affection and attentive Houjo, he was a constant reminder of her happiest moments with somebody else. His soft pleas that she take better care of herself turned into annoyed… concerned growls in her head, and brought the smallest of smiles to her face.
Kouga and Houjo, they loved her in the straight forward fashion that she understood, she hadn't needed to waste years plagued by indecision before ever of them let her know how they felt. They made her fell appreciated and continued to do so even now, with that defeated glint in their eyes. She could have loved them if it wasn't for Inuyasha.
The situation wasn't ideal for either of them, but knowing that even a small part of her heart was willing to accept them… even fleetingly, kept them both happy.
Kagome was leading them along, but she knew that letting them go would hurt them, and herself. So instead she made a little more room in her heart in order to keep a smile on their faces and when one of them grasped her hand, or held her close she would simply imagine white hair and amber eyes over an already canine face, she'd envision sharp claws on very human hands. They loved her after all, it was the least she could do.
a/n: Perhaps not the best I could have done, but I'm still pleased with it.
This is my first Inuyasha story so the Kagome's characterisation may not have been perfect, but I can work on that.
