The sound of battle is still going, thundering in Neville's ears and making his head ring with unsaid words. He has to find Luna before it's too late. He's hopeful and looks around for her, asking anyone who could have seen her to point him in the right direction. Meanwhile his spells hit their targets and his magic slowly deplets.
Then he sees her.
She's always been gentle, but when Luna carefully sets the nose of a little girl no older than twelve that has fallen behind her classmates and never made it to the improvised shelters, Neville knows she really is selfless.
Dawn is breaking and its light hits her after coming through the broken windows. A halo is formed around her, and for a single second Neville lets himself forget about the battle and contemplates Luna.
Her hair is dirty and her jeans have tears on them, but to Neville she's never looked more beautiful.
"Neville!"
She says his name and Neville tries to find the words he came to say, but they die in his mouth when she smiles and walks to where he clumsily stands.
"I'm glad you're here," he tells her and slowly leans down to kiss her.
Their lips meet and he's not in Hogwarts anymore. The light is out and the only thing in Neville's world is Luna. He can see her but there is nobody else around; they're alone for the first time in so many months, but it doesn't last.
As soon as he brings his hands to cup her cheeks and she stands on the tip of her toes to reach his lips better, a scream is heard and they separate. The blush in her cheeks is not hidden away by the dirt on her face, and as she goes on to help more people he runs to find the snake he has to kill.
They have to survive because their moment was cut short and Neville won't leave it at that!
