Should've Been Selfish

By: ChoCedric

All he was trying to do was help her through the portrait hole, and she had to get all snippy about it. He doesn't understand why he can't be a kindly gentleman around her. Why must she always insist on doing things herself? She deserves to be taken care of once in a while!

He sees the way she looks at Harry Potter, and he can't help but think, was she just using me to get to him? He's seen the jealous looks Harry's given the two of them, and Dean knows that the other boy's developing feelings for her. But Dean really likes Ginny; why can't they be together? Why can't things go back to the way they used to be, when they first started going out?

When Ginny officially breaks it off with him, he feels his heart break. They say teenage romances are fickle, but Dean really did like Ginny, and she's really hurt his feelings. Why couldn't she just plain admit that she likes Harry? She always skirts around the subject whenever Dean brings him up.

It is not that long later that the final Quidditch game of the season is played, and Dean sees his ex-girlfriend catch the Snitch. There is a party in full swing, but it is totally ruined for Dean when Harry rushes into the room and he and Ginny start snogging in plain view, their tongues practically down each other's throats. In that wild moment, the glass he is holding shatters, but nobody notices. The whole room is riveted on the sight of Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley making out like they're two wild animals in a zoo.

Dean doesn't know how he gets through the next few weeks. He reflects, as he watches Harry and Ginny walking down the corridors arm in arm, about all the things he may have done wrong in the relationship. But the one thing that really bugs him is the fact that she wouldn't let him be gentlemanly and help her. Maybe she'd still be with me, he thinks miserably, if I'd been selfish. Merlin, I should've been selfish.
