After putting in another 12 hour day at the base trying to work out the bugs in the "iris melting thingy" Sam climbed into bed and let herself take a deep breath and relax. She thought about the device she was building, about the futility of it actually working. Why had she worked so hard the last two and a half months on it? She was tired, worn out, exhausted, stressed and hadn't had a good night's sleep in about...hmm two and a half months. And for what...for Jack. Sam sighed and thought back to the conversation she had with Janet just days after Jack was trapped.

Janet: "You miss him?"

Sam: "Yeah."

Janet: "Is that going to be a problem?"

Sam: "No. No, not al all."

Sam had said "no", but what she meant was "not as long as SI don't have to keep missing him much longer". She missed him. A lot. She missed his smile, his clichés, his gray hair that would always tuft in all directions, his paranoia, his ability to not understand anything she said, his...wait a second, this was making her miss him more. Sam rolled over and stared out the window at the full moon. He was her commanding officer, yes, but more than that he was her friend, her...her friend. Friends. That's all they could ever be. But now that she had finally admitted to herself how she felt she resolved to change that. She would finish the device, find him, and tell him how she felt. Secure in that knowledge she closed her eyes and, for the first time in two and a half months, got a good night's sleep.

Two weeks later

Sam breathed in the cool Edoran air and turned to Jack. She started rambling off something about the malp and the gate being vertical. But she really wanted to say what had been on her mind constantly for the past two weeks. This wasn't the time or the place. She would wait till they got back to earth and could talk privately. Jack suddenly turned and walked away. OK, she knew her explanation was probably boring and didn't make any sense to him but still...Then she saw where he walked to. Or, more important, who he walked to, Laira. They stood talking for several minutes. Sam couldn't hear what they said but, fortunately for her, she could do a pretty good lip read. She maneuvered to a place where she could see them both. When she did she just about died.

For a moment her heart stopped as she realized what had gone on the last three months. She frowned, took a deep breath and walked back towards Daniel and Teal'c. So much for telling him how she felt. That would be impossible now. His heart belonged to another and hers...hers was broken. Jack had been trapped off world for 100 days and, for Samantha Carter, that would always be 100 days too many.
