Anything for Prim
I stood stiff among hundreds,
to be sentenced to die.
I held myself together for her,
although I wanted to cry.
My darling little sister,
her name was innocent, honest, tiny: Prim.
The thought never crossed my mind,
because her chances were so slim.
Her name was entered once;
mine several more times.
I was likely to be chosen,
but Prim was penny in a jar of dimes.
They spun the wheel slowly,
and I began to hold my breath.
I was so sure she was safe,
but two among us would be put to death.
They pulled out a paper
and announced the chosen one.
I was so completely shocked,
that I took off in a run.
How did this happen?
Did they read the wrong name?
After what I was going to do,
I knew nothing would be the same.
But she was my little sister,
so I took her place instead.
It's so frightening to think,
that in two days I'll be dead.
