The wind brushed past Hawkgirl as she continued toward the forest. She tried her best to hold back tears. She didn't visit him much, but whenever she had the chance and time to, she always cried her heart to her friend.
Shayera only carried two things with her to visit him. Her Nth metal mace in her left hand, as she always kept with her. And a hastily written letter in her left hand. Gripping to the paper as if her life depended on it, she walked toward his resting place. She herself had buried him according to Earth traditions. Flowers and grass accompanied the ground in front and around the tomb.
The neatly carved words on the headstone read: Solomon Grundy, Born on a Monday.
Some warm tears rolled down her cheek despite the Thanagarian armor she wore. Pulling herself together, she was about to place the letter to Grundy on his tombstone, but paused. Shayera instead decided to re-read it for errors before sending it to Grundy.
Hi Grundy
It's me, Birdnose. I wanted to talk to you one last time beforeā¦.something happens. But first, how are you? I hope you finally found your soul wherever you are. What am I saying, of course you found it! Anyway, things are fine where I am. I have a little secret to tell you, me and John are finally together!
Don't tell anyone! There was a little incident with some kid called Static and his friend Gear, involving the Watchtower and Brainiac, but no big deal.
Also, Grodd created an 'Injustice Gang'. Of course it failed. Though I still kinda hold a grudge against Killer Frost. While fighting in Metropolis, Toyman 'killed' Superman, but it turns out he was just teleported to the future. He even had a beard when he got back.
During Earth's 'winter' season, me and John had some fun in the snow. Afterwards, I took him to my favorite alien moon to celebrate. Got into a bit of a bar fight for fun while we were there as well. John is still a bit sore about that.
Earlier this week, we stopped Joker from blowing up Las Vegas! He made it even more difficult for us by hiring a batch of Cadmus's meta-human teens and called them the Royal Flush Gang. Strange name right?
Hawkgirl paused. Then after a moment she continued.
Grundy, I'm going to do it in a few days. What is 'it' you ask? It means betraying the League. It means turning my back to everyone both good and bad on Earth. It means giving my friends for my people, the Thanagarians. I'm sorry Grundy. I'm glad you don't have to suffer to whatever they're going to do to the Earthlings.
As much as it stings me just to betray Earth, there's more. I am promised to Hro Talak. He has suffered by the Gordanains. But who do I love more? John or Talak? I must decide now or never and I have. My people are my loyalty, I will not harm Earth, but protect as always, just in a different way. I'm sorry John.
I'm sorry Grundy.
Carefully kneeling in front of the grave so she wouldn't disturb the flowers, she placed the letter. With that, Shayera flew off. The visit felt like it hurt her heart more. Her eyes were slightly red from crying. She continued with the path she was on with only one word in her mind: I'm sorry.
