Two found One sitting cross legged on the edge of the bridge.
The night was very peaceful and a cool breeze was messing up One's hair. Two sat next to One.
They both stared into the distance for a few minutes.
"I like to come here," said One.
"I know," said Two.
They continued sitting in silence for a few minutes.
One turned to look at Two: "Are you here to stop me?"
Two looked back at One: "No, I'm here so that you're not alone."
"You know," said One after taking a few deep breaths, "I don't think I'd be able to climb the fence. I'm not strong enough.
"I hate it though. It ruins the view."
"Do you think you'd be sad? If I jumped, I mean."
Two looked at One: "Probably. You're a great person to have around, you know?"
One didn't answer.
Two slowly but suddenly pointed at the sky: "What do you see?"
One looked at the black expanse of nothing that stretched out as far as the eye could see above their heads.
"There's nothing."
"That's not true. Not entirely, at least. There is the Nothing, and it fills the sky with its emptiness."
"Having anything else is better than having Nothing," One pointed out. "Nothing is a big thing that takes up space, even though it consists of emptiness."
"So why did you come to sit with the Big Empty Nothing? It won't make it grow smaller, you know?" asked Two.
"I know. It just feels... peaceful. I don't have to do anything, but I could. I could just climb, and then jump when I need to."
Two looked at One: "Do you need to right now?"
One's face was a mask of calmness: "I don't know."
They sat there for a long time. A few cars passed them several times.
One looked at Two.
Two looked at One.
One smiled at Two.
A few minutes later, One got up, and Two did the same.
"Do you want me to go with you?" Two asked One.
"Yes, I do," said One.
They both left the bridge, and the Big Empty Nothing followed them, slightly bigger than before.
This is something I wrote a long while ago on my Wattpad and decided to re-post here (thank my friend T for that). It's kept deliberatly vague; interpret it as you wish.
