When the end came, it wasn't unwelcome.

The room was cast in a pleasant golden light from the setting sun, banishing shadows and introducing a warm glow to the wooden floor and the few furnishing. Particles of dust were dancing on the beams of light, falling slowly, undisturbed.

The air was dry and warm, smelling slightly of dust and infused with silence, which wasn't oppressive or bothersome. It just was.

He wasn't lonely as his love was also here.

And the blood rushed in his ears, shattering the silence.

The smell of dust was now overpowered by the scent of iron.

The dust dancing on the golden light fell on the silent form on the floor and finally settled on the pool of blood slowly spreading outwards on the wooden floor, glinting in the setting sun.

Jane found himself on his knees, staring at Lisbon on the floor, feeling numb, just listening to the roar of blood in his ears threatening to drown him.

He shuffled closer until his knees were touching Lisbon's outstretched arm, not noticing that he was now sitting in the pool of rapidly cooling blood.

He reached out and gently, ever so gently brushed the hair out of Lisbon's face to see her lovely features relaxed in death.

There was no sound, but the tears flowed freely, falling into the pool of blood, splashing quietly, barely making a mark of their passing.

His heart painfully constricted one more time before it shattered as he let everything go.

Now that it was too late.

Jane was vaguely aware that someone was walking towards the room.

He slowly lay down on the floor and gently gathered Lisbon into his arms and pressed a kiss on her forehead. He closed his eyes and concentrated on the still lingering warmth of Lisbon, the subtle smell of her shampoo and the way she folded perfectly against his body.

There was nothing left but Lisbon.

And when the sharp knife softly sliced his throat, he welcomed the darkness that followed.

The end
