Disclaimer: I do not own School of Rock, but I wish that I did because that would be splendid.

If Katie was Lucky:

Dreamy Brainwaves and Scattered Heartbeats

Katie had always watched him knowing that he was one of the many boys that she could never have – unfortunately he was the only one that she wanted. At one time he had been the boy she would never want.

Katie was quiet, unassuming and seldom spoke her mind. If you had seen her on a street corner you would have pegged her differently… as an emo… a goth… a rebel of sorts… she was none of those things. She was just Katie – a deep thinker, and an aimless dreamer.

When the girls in Katie's class asked her which one the boys she liked she responded only with a shrug. They all seemed to think she had a thing for Zack – quiet, musical Zack. She had no problem with letting them belie that – if only to throw them off the trail that led to her real object of affection: Freddy Jones.

Katie had first started to like Freddy in fifth grade when Dewey Finn had caused the scandal which resulted in the creation of the School of Rock. They were ten years old at the time and Katie had never liked Freddy- even as a person. He had always come across as arrogant and self-centered – he had been.

But somehow the music had changed him. She could only describe it in one way: he used to read the notes, now he really played them with feeling. This translated over into his everyday life as well. He used to walk through life without feeling (or at least without good feeling), but Freddy now appeared to have a brain – not to mention, a heart.

Katie once thought that this new Freddy would go away and he would return to his regular garish self. Inexplicably he had been changed forever… changed forever into a boy who had more and more begun to take up residence in Katie's dreamy brainwaves, and scattered heartbeats.

Although it was quite obvious to her that if Freddy took up ninety-nine percent of her thought processes she took up only one percent of his – if she was lucky.

The prize of Freddy's heart and mind went to none other than Summer Hathaway – not that she appreciated it.

For instance, last summer Katie had been incited to Summer's sweet sixteen slumber party. They had been playing Truth and Dare and Katie had dumbly asked Summer if she loved Freddy. Fortunately all the other girls at the party were just a little bit dumber and hadn't realized her true motive.

Summer's response had been something to the effect that "Only until something better comes along." This was the difference between Katie and Summer: Summer was waiting for something better; Katie didn't believe that anything better existed.
