He was running down one of the many Wammy's House hallways. He wasn't sure why, but something felt wrong.
Something bad was going to happen, had already started. But if he ran, maybe he could make it, maybe he could stop it.
Suddenly, the end of the hallway loomed into view, and he saw the back of a familiar red head.
"Matt!" He called, but the other boy didn't respond. He just continued staring at the wall.
As Mello got closer, he saw what the other boy was staring at. It was a picture of him that had been taken out in front of Wammy's House. The clear blue sky was framed by tree branches covered in yellow flowers.
"Damnit Matt, now is not the time to be looking at stupid pictures. We can take another later, so come on." But Matt still wouldn't turn around.
"Come on Matt, turn around and answer me." Mello demanded, feeling the fear in him rising.
"No." Matt replied quietly, almost too quietly for Mello to hear.
"Why the hell not?" Mello almost screamed. "We have to get out of here. NOW!"
Matt shook his head. "Once I turn around, you won't like me anymore."
At this, Mello unleashed a snarl of fury and lunged forward, grabbing Matt's shoulder and spinning the gamer around to face him.
Except Matt wasn't facing him. Matt was lying on the side of the road in a pool of blood and broken glass.
Mello tried to run to his friend, but some force held him back. All he could do was watch helplessly as an ambulance arrived and took Matt away.
And in background, the winds seemed to be taunting him, "Your fault" they whispered, "All your fault."
Mello woke panting, eyes flicking around rapidly until he realized where he was. He was in his room at Wammy's House, and Matt was sleeping peacefully next to him.
Putting his arms around the gamer, Mello pulled him closer and forced himself to relax.
After all, L was out there to catch the criminals, and Mello would never hurt his friend.
What could possibly happen?

"I'm sorry Matt. I'm so sorry."
Tears flowing free on to cold, uncaring cement.
"I'm sorry. It was all my fault."
Another depressing Death Note story courtesy of my eating way too much sugar before bed. I know it's short, but it says what it was meant to say, so extending it seems a bit pointless. Sorry to any Matt fans out there.
Matt, Mello, and the rest of the Death Note crew belong to Ohba and Obata
