I could have been someone, you know? It wasn't my planned career path to be working in the Public Records Department. No. I was going to be making records.
I was in a band, you see. I'd like to say that a love of music brought us together but, more accurately, it was a love of noise. In those early days what we lacked in talent, we made up for in volume.
Putting the band together wasn't easy. It took ages to get a line up which gelled. Initially, everyone seemed to just bicker. Then getting performance permits took ages and finally the lyrics had to be vetted by the Federation Culture Department. To 18 year old me, that was a huge inconvenience. The number of songs which had to be changed! "Rebel in a Rumpus" became one of our best loved songs "Conform for the good of All!"
I guess we were lucky to have such a good drummer. Guy called Sarcov. He was an exchange student. Terribly well spoken but, boy, could that kid keep a beat! Strangely, he insisted on using real drums, said you could hear the difference compared with, "That synthesized nonsense." Anyway, it was only a problem if a gig had a small stage. Not sure what happened to him after we split. I think he went off to be president of somewhere.
Our bass player was an alpha called Blake. He was great too. Played with a lot of freedom and really made the songs his own. Which is why, earlier tonight, it was such a surprise when those 2 came in and mentioned him! I didn't show any emotion and played it cool. It wouldn't be much good to say, "Did you know he used to be in my band?" when they were trying to investigate a case of major corruption.
Major Corruption was one of the names we thought about calling ourselves. I reckon it had a nice ring to it. Borb on guitar, Janic and Griff (the brass section) all disagreed. They reckoned that no one would want to come a listen to us with a name like that. So in the end we decided on Blake's 7. It made us laugh - there weren't even 7 of us! We even kept the name after Blake stopped being a regular in the band's line up.
So anyway, on these late night shifts, I like to sit and listen to our back catalogue on my headphones. Just after those two left tonight I did what I often do – call up security to invite them down. Make a party of it. Often they bring a few synth beers. They love our stuff.
Yes, I could have been someone.
