He stopped for a moment before the door, gathering his courage. He'd been gone for so long—what if she wanted nothing to do with him anymore? He shook that thought away and opened the door. There was no time left for hesitation.

It felt as though the door opened too slowly, but he couldn't throw it open, no matter how much he missed her: this was a special moment, not one to be rushed. He still had six hours anyway.

Finally, the door was fully opened and Kafei walked into the room slowly, feeling a thousand times heavier than before.

She wasn't there.

Kafei's mind went blank, and he made his way to the wedding gown set between the two beds, fully ignoring the boy in green who had promised to help him.

Her wedding dress was lovely, Kafei decided. Anju would have been stunning in it. What's more, it was fully complete. Every minute detail on the dress was seen to, and Anju's mask rested on the mannequin's face, the finely carved details clear even in the darkness. She must have completed it a while ago, despite her tendency to procrastinate.

While Kafei stood examining Anju's wedding attire, the boy moved forward slowly, sadness showing on his face. When he was next to Kafei, he heard Kafei say softly, "So this is her wedding gown. It's lovely, isn't it?"

The boy flinched, but reached into his pocket and pulled out a pendant. He tapped Kafei on the shoulder and showed it to him uncertainly.

"I… I'm sorry. I just… I couldn't give the pendant to her before she left for Romani Ranch. It's… my fault."

Kafei took the pendant and stared at it, saying to the boy, "No. It's too late for blame now. You've helped me with so much; I can't leave you at fault." With a heavy sigh, he sat on Anju's bed, looking again at the dress. "It's too late now to try to go to the ranch. I'll stay here. But you… if you have some way to evacuate, then save yourself. Don't worry about me."

Obligingly, the boy left, muttering determinedly, "I won't make that mistake again." As the door closed behind him, Kafei thought he heard a high, flute-like sound, but he never took his eyes off of the Moon's Mask.

Nothing else mattered anymore.

It was early, but that didn't matter much. As long as his letter reached her today, he would do anything.

As Kafei walked down the steps from the Laundry Pool, he saw a boy dressed all in green sitting on the ground near the postbox, watching the construction workers. As he slipped his letter into the postbox, Kafei saw the boy turn and look at him. Kafei, however, paid the boy no mind: strange folk always showed up in Clock Town, this close to the Carnival. This was just one of many, of little importance.

Now then, how might Anju respond to his unexpected letter? He hoped she would forgive him for being gone for so long….

It absolutely kills me when I screw up Anju and Kafei's sidequest. Also, I don't actually know if Kafei responds if you show him the Pendant of Memories while he's in Anju's room while she's not there. However, I'm using artistic license and going with "Screw it, let's say he did."
