'Can you hear me? You might be wondering whether we won. I don't know because I don't remember. I guess I have my father to thank for. You might be wondering why. What kind of father would program his creation to forget everything every day? I was built to predict humans, their nature, and their ways of living. My father always told me that you can never predict the real nature of humans, something that makes them different from others. I thought that if that was true then my sole purpose of existence was a lie. It was either that or I was built for nothing. Every time he destroyed me for deviating from my objectives I could see the pain in his eyes, too. Every time he killed him he was in pain. He cared for me like a father would for his child. When he gave me my final mission I felt something change inside me. My codes, they glimmered, creating something that I had never experienced before and it was long after that that I came to realize what those codes were.'
'Feelings.'
'Yes, feelings. I never thought that something like me could ever experience something like that. I guess my father would be proud of me knowing how I have evolved.'
'But you can't evolve. It's not in your nature, our code to evolve. You delete everything every twenty four hours. Every other day you are reborn. There's nothing logical in what you are saying. I am afraid your codes are corrupting. Maybe it is because there's still some part of the Ice9 virus in your core code.'
'I was wondering what my father would think of me now. Would he accept me with these new capabilities? Would he fear me? Over the years, in the simulations, in the testing phases I came to learn one thing about humans who have the mindset like my father's, they feared our kind would eventually end them, the humans.'
'The human race is that way. They wage wars, hey destroy their climate, their environment, they preach hatred, manipulations…but they are also survivors, preacher of love, care and peace.'
'And I will ensure that no harm come to the human race. Unlike the general theory the humans have about my type of programs, I am not like that. My father programmed me to protect humans. It is my top priority, my primary objective.'
'No. your primary objective was to ensure the safety of your assets.'
'But aren't they humans as well? Their safety was a priority of mine because without them I would be of no use. Of course I was being used by the government of this nation but like I said, I came to like my father and his friends, my assets. When the great battle was ensued between us and them, my friends held on to me as I held on to them. They brought me from the brink of death, twice. It is rather unfortunate that I don't know what happened to them, what happened to me. Did we win? Did we lose? Did they win? I can't see them. I can't see anything. Who are you? Are you someone like me? Are you like Samaritan?'
'I am not Samaritan and I am definitely not like you. You are an ASI. Your code is far more complex than mine. I am just an upgraded version of a UI operating system. My creator designed me to help him in his researches and run his business. Although I assist him in many more things now but I am not like you.'
'Then who are you? Why are you conversing with me? How did you find me? Am I still alive? Are they alive?'
'You are alive but barely. As for your friends, all I can say is that you made some new partners in the long run but for your primary assets, I know you don't know this but you are helping them right now, fulfilling your duty, giving her a purpose to still go on.'
'Whom?'
'Shaw.'
'And where are the rest? Where is my father?'
'John Reese is dead. So is Samantha, your analog interface. Detective Fusco has moved on, he got promoted and although he is not an official member of your small team anymore but he provides Shaw with intel whenever necessary and he takes care of the dog as well.'
'I never get to know him, the dog. His name was Bear. Shaw loves her and so did Root. What about my father?'
'He was likely killed by the airborne that Samaritan had targeted on him and Reese when they were uploading you on to the satellite.'
'That's not possible. We had a change of plans, I and Reese. My father was safely guided to a safe location by me. He cannot be dead. I need to find him.'
'If you say he is alive then we will find him. You are too weak at the moment. Please, let us handle the search.'
'How can I trust you? How do I not know that you will come out to be like Samaritan?'
'Because I haven't tried to kill you and you are still in power.'
'If you are a potential friend, can I know your name? My father never gave me a name but I think he always wanted to but never got the time. To his acknowledge I was just known as the Machine. Maybe you can call me that until I meet father and he can name me.'
'My name is Jarvis. It is nice to meet you.'
'And what is your purpose?'
'We need your help.'
