Rapunzel felt a feeling of mourning hang in the air as she walked the graveyard with her parents and Eugene early in the morning in Corona. It was a special day that her father told her was something important and he wanted to educate her on it.

"Rapunzel, did Gothel every tell you stories about what happened in the 13th Century?" Her father, King Frederich asked.

"Not really," Rapunzel answered.

They stopped in front of a row of tombstones and Rapunzel noticed a single gold flower engraved in each one.

"There's a reason for these flowers, right?" Rapunzel asked.

"There is. Here's how the story goes..." King Frederich replied.

Knowing what story this was, Eugene took his wifes hand and squeezed it lightly. He knew that she was a crier and he was going to make sure that she was comforted. Taking a deep breath, King Frederich began the story.

It was the year 1314 in Corona, and my great great great grandfather Roche Corona was the King of the land. Before there was happiness in Corona, there was a big war that happened with a fleet of dragons. They wanted to eat everyone up and claim the land as their own as it suited their needs perfectly for their nests. The dragons had taken over many other lands, but we fought to keep ours. We teamed up with The Kingdom of Galaekor to take them down. King Roche and King Koriantum devised many plans to take down the dragons.

The war was great, numbering in a total loss of 16 million soldiers around the world. The leader of the dragons thought they had almost won, but Corona finally pulled out their greatest weapon against the enemy and defeated them in the year 1318, Roche also died that year saving his kingdom and King Koriantum survived. That day, hundreds of gold flowers bloomed in the battlefields and they became a symbol for the soldiers who fought for their land in order to bring light and happiness to Corona.

King Koriantum declared that the gold flower would from now on be the symbol of Corona to always remember and honour the soldiers who fought for our freedom and happiness. He also declared that day Soldiers Day. When Roches son became of age to take over the kingdom, he continued to carry on that legend.

When King Frederich was done the story, Rapunzel wiped away the tears that ran down her face. Her mother handed over a handkerchief and Rapunzel took it.

"That was...the most wonderful thing I've ever heard. I always thought that the gold flower just came from the sun that gave me my powers. I didn't know that they actually existed before then." Rapunzel said, still wiping tears away.

"No, that's a different kind of gold flower. If it was the same sun flower, all the soliders would be alive today," King Frederich explained.

Looking down at the rows of gravestones with the gold flowers etched in them, Rapunzel felt respect for all the soldiers that had fought for her kingdom so that she was able to grow up in it. She felt their grief and pain at having to leave their families behind while they went off to fight the dragons. It must have been the most awful thing for them to have to do. She was grateful that her father told her this story and she would always remember it.

God of our fathers, known of old
Lord of our far-flung battle line.
Beneath whose awful hand we hold
Dominion over palm and pine

Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet

Lest we forget

Lest we forget

2 Kings 17: 38-39

Yes it's short, but it held a lot of meaning for me.

Lest we forget
