Stopping the War

Prologue (September of 1903)

I remember waking up next to my lover Jack Kelly as the sun rose high in the sky over Manhattan and all of New York. Life was great except for one thing. The war between Brooklyn and Manhattan. The war that oftentimes separated Jack and me. The war that I often begged my boyfriend Spot Conlon to stop.

Ah that war was a bad one I tell ya…full of bloodshed, heartbreak, tears and all the other stuff that comes with wars ya know. However the thing that bothered me is the fact that I was with the leader of Brooklyn but I was in love with the leader of Manhattan and before the war was over one of them would fall and I wouldn't have the chance to do a thing.

My name is Melissa aka Doll which is my Newsie Name. I got that nickname because Jack Kelly himself said I looked like a porcelain doll. I'm 19 now but I feel almost 50 from everything that has happened in the last few months. As I stand here at the cemetery with a coat that barely beats the chill of the oncoming winter and the thought of upcoming single motherhood a tear runs down my cheek as I place a rose on the still freshly dug grave and it is then that I walk away.

Chapter 1 (June of 1903)

Doll woke up to see spot lying next to her. His bright blue eyes were wide-awake as if he had been lying there for at least an hour watching her sleep.

"Morning doll." Spot said as he kissed her gently

"Morning…" doll sad quietly. She wasn't much of a morning person so she hated even so much as having to get out of bed at 6am to make a living.
