Chapter One

Teresa Lisbon was lying on her side, struggling with the ropes binding her wrists behind her back. The room bathed in total darkness and the cement floor felt cold and damp against her scorched skin. She couldn't remember anything prior waking up a few minutes ago, and it made her anxious. Before letting hysteria take over, she closed her eyes and focused on her breathing. She couldn't go crazy yet, she needed to stay alert and assess the situation.

Finally, Lisbon made an attempt to move into a sitting position. A decision she regretted immediately. A flash of pain surged through her body, strong enough to send her jolting back on the ground. She clenched her teeth and cried in agony. A wave of nausea washed over her, making her head spin like a windmill.

"Oh, God!" she choked, burying her face in the dirt. She didn't know for how long she stayed immobile, but she didn't dare move a muscle until the pain subdued and her breathing returned to normal.

Her anxiety drastically went up a few notches. This wasn't a simple nightmare she could wake up from. The realisation that she was in a life-threatening situation was beginning to sink in. Whoever had brought her here had the upper hand and she was at his or their mercy.

"Help!" she struggled to shout, wincing at the throbbing pain coming from her waist. "Is anyone out there!"

No matter how hard she tried, she had no recollection of the events that led her here. In fact, all of her memories were extremely foggy and the more she tried to remember, the more her head hurt.

An adrenaline rush went through her body, allowing her to overpass the pain and have another attempt to struggle against the restraints. Pain be damned, she needed to act fast. Twisting her wrists around, the ropes only tightened more, painfully pinching at her skin. Her eyes swelled with tears and her bottom lip quivered. She couldn't admit defeat yet, not ever. She needed to fight this, to get out of these ropes and find a way out of this hole.

"Can anyone hear me?" she screamed. "Please!"

The sound of her voice echoed faintly against the impenetrable walls of her prison. Out of breath and exhausted, Lisbon dropped her head against the ground. She was aware of the significant temperature drop and knew it had nothing to do with the ambient air. Her injury was far more serious than anticipated and because of it she was growing weaker. The side of her waist felt numb and the feeling was gradually spreading through her body.

"I'm going to die," she whimpered, her voice barely audible to her own ears. Her eyelids grew heavy and Lisbon complied, closing her eyes and slipping into oblivion.
