You are my sunshine...

Dave's face burned with blush. He wasn't sure if it were from the activity currently taking place, or if it was from the strain of holding back sobs. Karkat, however, seemed to not care about being tough anymore, for translucent red tears streamed from his eyes, which were currently hidden under his ruffled and matted hair that hung over his face as he held his head low. His horns, which would normally shine a bright yellow-orange, were stained an ugly black color from all the blood that stuck to them, and Dave had long since abandoned his shades, for they had been ruined long ago with the blood of his former friends.

my only sunshine...

The music rang out around the clearing, bouncing off the trees and echoing into the dark night sky above them. The sound was beautiful, the echo making it seem as though a hundred tiny mouths were singing all around them, as they danced to the song that played.

you make me happy, when skies are grey...

Karkat released a heart-breaking sob, stumbling slightly. Dave was quick to catch him and get back into the rhythm of the dance, putting one hand in Karkat's opposite, and using his other to hold onto the small troll's waist. Neither of them knew how to dance, but that was fine for them, because nobody was around to watch them stumble and awkwardly trip over each other's feet. For a split second, it seemed that all was perfect in their world. Never again would something bad happen.

And then they heard it.

The groan of a zombie from in the trees behind them. It was a girl's voice, and it seemed to have an edge to it, with a slight rubbery tone. The two turned their heads briefly to see Terezi Pyrope, the tealblood who had been the closest to them each. Instead of the usual bright red her eyes once had, they were hollow and black, and her glasses were nowhere to be seen. Karkat screamed, and Dave just pulled him closer, obscuring his vision of the zombie that loomed threateningly above them. Well, above Karkat. Dave carefully placed his feet to cover her up just perfectly, so it would seem as though he were taller. In reality, however, adult trolls grew to be much, much taller than Dave had ever been, and ever would be. A giant, mindless zombie girl, who they had once known as a best friend, stumbled towards them from behind while they danced without a care in the world.

you'll never know, dear, how much I love you...

More and more zombies piled from all directions, Dave recognizing each and every one. He held Karkat in as close of an embrace possible, yet not enough to stop him from spotting all their loved ones, all the friends they had made, all the ones that the both of them would miss most.

please don't take...

Karkat broke into sobs, before stumbling once more and just throwing himself into Dave's arms. The dancing ceased, and Dave just pulled the tiny mutant into his arms, a tight and loving embrace. There they were. At the end of it all. Dave Strider began to cry.

my sunshine away.

They were completely surrounded, the groaning and screeching drowning out the music completely. All claws and weapons were raised, while Dave and Karkat simply stood in each other's arms, weaponless. Dave pulled his beloved close for one last brief kiss, their lips coming together for only a split second before the human broke away, leaning close into Karkat's ear. The pain of the biting and clawing and stabbing from the monsters surrounding them was enough to make them both scream, and yet, they stayed silent as a couple of mice.

He whispered a single word, before all went black. Their end was finally here. They did the best they could, and they failed.

"Goodbye."
