CHALLENGE:
Jose Porla was defeated by Makarov with Fairy Law, unknown to many his magic was corrupting his thoughts and putting a restraint on his full magical power (i mean come on people, he even said himself that a fight between saints would level the landscape) but when Fairy Law purges all of the dark magic from his Ethernano/magic system (which results in his hair going grey like in the anime), his mind is in shock of finally being perfectly sane and in control of his actions that he can't even respond to Makarov's statement of "never mess with Fairy Tail again". Afterwards he's taken by the magic council after being arrested to be given his sentence which turns out to be x(you decide but no more than 5) years in magical prison which is where he comes to the conclusion that he must truly master Darkness magic so it master him and he does this by confronting his darker personality (like Naruto does in the waterfall of truth) and coming to an agreement with his darker personality they merge and he continues to train to master his power (his hair eventually turns back to red but now it has a couple black streaks mixed with some grey which never went away as a result of fairy law, and with no access to any shaving supplies in lock-down (which is where he was sent... not a normal prison because Wizard Saint duh) he grows a pretty full beard over that time (like Zaheers off Legend of Korra when he breaks out of prison but with a mustache and also red with black and grey streaks through it).
TIMESKIP: After he serves his sentence and further rehabilitation with Jura Neekis(or any other wizard saint) overseeing said rehabilitation and mental therapy, to which the new magical council is impressed and as they are not as bad as the previous one (Etherion i mean dafuq ppl you let a thought projection fool you into firing that bitch) they ask him what he's going to do with his life now that Phantom Lord has been disbanded to which he replies "I'm going to travel, i dont know wht ill find but i hope im ready for it" while thinking about destroying fairy tail (which is his last remnants of his darker personality) and he takes the train to Magnolia (and because he hasn't seen any news since hes been in jail) and having changed into what he wore years previous(but slightly faded and ripped) but with the coat open revealing a white longsleeved shirt with a Phantom Lord symbol on it, he walks up to where Fairy Tail used to be and is confused as to where its gone and some twilight ogre people walk past him on the street talking about how they are going to smash fairy tail up, he trails them and is lead Fairy Tail. What he finds there is such a shock as he knew Makarov would never let this happen to his guild. He then walks back to Magnolia planning to get the news of what happened to Fairy Tail and as such he learns that the Black Dragon Acnologia wiped out the island that the S Class exams were being held, Makarov included.
