The Red Crayon
By silver-nightstorm
Summary: He only wanted the crayon. He didn't understand why he couldn't have what he wanted.

Tom Marvolo Riddle was three years old when he first realized that he was special. He was coloring with three other children from the orphanage and he needed the red crayon to color in his fire truck. There was only one red crayon but the little girl named Mary who had it refused to let Tom use it. Tom got angry and suddenly, the little girl was crying with a yellow crayon in her hand while Tom held the red.
He knew then that he was special.
But Mary tattled to Mrs. Cole and Tom got in trouble. He wasn't allowed to color for the entire week. It was then that Tom understood how unfair the world was. Mary didn't share and because Tom was special he was still allowed to use the crayon. But Mary… she was a horrible person! She wouldn't give Tom what he wanted! She was deserved to lose the crayon, because the nice father that Mrs. Cole called "God" decided that Tom was more worthy of the crayon than stupid Mary. And Mary didn't listen to God, and then she tattled to Mrs. Cole. It wasn't fair that Tom got in trouble for something that clearly was given to him.
The next time when they sat coloring, the girl once again refused to lend Tom the red crayon. Softly, under his breath, so no one could possibly hear, Tom whispered the phrase that Mrs. Cole said one should never say to another.
"I hate you."
