"Why do things always have to be so darn complicated?" Col John Sheppard thought to himself during a moment of quiet in his quarters, "Why does she have to be the Exped leader and my superior? Hell, why couldn't I have feelings for one of the caring, kind sympathetic nurses that worked with Carson, or even some of the fantastic looking egg heads who graced Rodney's labs? No, not me, I have to go and fantasise about Dr Elizabeth Weir, the beautiful, intelligent, fabulous – yeah, ok I get the picture!" he stormed at himself as he flung himself down on his single bed, what was wrong with Teyla? She was beautiful, intelligent and off worldly…oh yeah…Ronan!!

For sometime now Elizabeth had dominated his thoughts, since the attack on Atlantis by the Wraith and he had flown what was to have been a suicide mission. He had seen the look in her eyes when he had told her what he had to do, and the pain there when she had agreed. Then when he had been beamed back into Atlantis from the Daedalus and had said flippantly, "I'm home" she had approached him saying "yes you are" and practically hugged the life out of him. He had not known how to react. He landed up hugging her too, and thereby set the dilemma into being which now racked his heart and his thoughts.

John Sheppard did not think of himself as a romantic. He was a practical, fast thinking military man, who fought and lived by his wits. He had come to Atlantis because Elizabeth had asked him and he justified it by reason that he had the ancient gene. Ancient gene? What he wouldn't give for some wisdom from the Ancients now. But alas that only seemed to relate to Atlantis itself and not the hapless humans who found themselves based there.

He stretched again and decided he would dwell for a little while longer on the beautiful creature who lead the Atlantis Expedition in the Pegasus Galaxy, before he put all of his thoughts of her on the backburner of his mind for ever. "You're being over dramatic Sheppard" He reprimanded himself. "Look at it honestly, she's your superior, your boss, the leader of this expedition, charged with all the authority needed to run it and – and – you're in love with her – you fool!"

"John"

"What?" he asked stupidly, the sound of her voice invading his thoughts.

"John!" her voice more insistent this time.

"Yes, Elizabeth" he replied, feeling a complete fool.

"John, I need you in the gateroom please"

"On my way" he replied, wishing she had just said "I need you!" As he rose from his own bed, he slapped the back of his own head and said, "You just have to get a grip!" then made his way to the gateroom and normality.
