It was late May. The air was humid making it hard to get out of bed. Not that it already wasn't. Drowsiness, one of the side effects that had really affected me. I had read the effects of pregnancy in school, and I had started to re-read them when I found out I was expecting, just so I could be well prepared.
"Julia are you sure you want to go to work today?" William asked from the other room. I kicked my feet over the edge of the bed and placed a hand on my stomach. A kick! That was a good sign.
"Of course I am going to go to work. I'm not going to let some drowsiness stop me from doing my job." I say walking into the living room. "It's not you who I'm worried about its the baby who I'm concerned about." he said taking my hands.
"So I'm to believe that you are not at all concerned about your wife going to work while carrying your child?"
"No, what I'm saying is is that my wife is capable of handling herself and that she has a perfectly good assistant at the morgue who can take over for a while, just until you can officially go back to work."
He smiled knowing that he was right. "I'm off to work. Apparently they just found a body off Chestnut." he says grabbing his coat and kissing my cheek. "Looks like you need your coroner." I teased walking back into the bedroom to get changed.
Picking outfits where probably the most irritating tasks I had to do on a daily basis. Being a female doctor calls for a certain formality; collar shirts, ties, and corsets. I asked my superiors if I could wear other clothes for the time being. They allowed it with some reluctance. I chose my usual outfit; high necked white shirt and burgundy skirt. I do up my hair in a bun, or as Miss. Hart calls it, my "Trademark Hairstyle". Come to think of it the whole city wore these buns. It would be more like the hairstyle of the twentieth century. I grab my coat and head to the door. I stop and look around the room. I really was quite tired, and I had the slightest feeling that I should stay home. I shook my head. Miss. Hart couldn't do a full post mortem by herself with all her studies to complete on time. I grab my key and leave.
I take the stairs down to the lobby and nod to the clerk. He smiled and waved back. I continue to the entrance of the hotel. The doors glass and let the light in making the hotel seem brighter than it already was. The air was too humid to walk to work so I flagged down a carriage. He pulls over and opens the door for me. "City morgue please." I tell the driver as I climb into the carriage. He nods and closes the door.
