Pulling the pillow over her head, Jane tried to keep the sun from shining on her face. A throbbing pain shot just behind her eyes and she had a hard time waking up. Not remembering anything from the night before, she attempted to put the pieces of the puzzle back together as best as she could in the state that she was. Having trouble recalling anything, Jane tried to focus her attention on her surroundings, hoping that maybe that might tell her more about what happened and where she was.
Feeling the softness of the mattress and the fluffy blanket lying on her body told Jane that she was not in her own apartment. Slowly opening one eye, she lifted a corner of the pillow and looked around the room, trying to determine where the hell she was. Her headache was killing her and the last time she had drank this much must have been when she was still in the academy.
Focusing back on the room, she didn't recognize it at first, until she smelled a familiar scent. Pulling the pillow off her head entirely, she tried to sit up. Noticing the light blue color on the wall, the curtains on the windowsill and the painting above the dresser, she realized that she was at Maura's. Feeling a little reassured, Jane laid back down and rubbed her eyes in the hope to relieve some of the pain she was feeling.
Suddenly realization hit Jane like a ton of bricks when she comprehended that she was in fact in Maura's bedroom and not the guestroom where she normally slept. Turning on her side she saw Maura lying beside her. The honey blond doctor was lying on her stomach. However, that was not the first thing Jane noticed when she saw her best friend. The first thing that caught Jane's attention was the fact that Maura was naked! Like, no clothes naked!
A surge of panic invaded Jane's senses and suddenly a few moments from last night entered her mind. Even though they felt like a dream and nothing like the memories they actually were. Carefully Jane laid back down on her back, hoping that she did not wake her friend who was still peacefully sleeping and had no idea of the situation they were both now in.
Wanting to confirm her suspicion, Jane slowly lifted the blanket that was lying over her body. Here she saw that she herself was also butt naked. Having all the information she needed, Jane dropped the blanket and let out a growl of frustration. The last thing she could clearly remember was coming home with Maura after a night at the Dirty Robber where she had, once again, helped Maura get rid of a guy where she had no interest in.
Flashback
After getting home from a relaxing night at the Dirty Robber, Maura walked towards her fridge where she grabbed a beer for Jane and poured herself a glass of red wine. Jane, putting her gun in the drawer of Maura's desk, followed her suit into the kitchen. Grabbing both their drinks she made her way towards the couch, waiting for her friend to join her.
A few hours and some drinks later both Jane and Maura were still sitting in the living room, turned towards each other. A fire burning in the fireplace and soft music playing in the background. Once again Jane had to safe Maura from a guy who wanted her attention and asked her to go out with him, while she was not interested. So Jane played the jealous girlfriend, walking towards them at the bar and pulling her jacket aside to show him her badge and gun, which made the guy run for his life. It was a fun little play they did whenever one of them had to get out of a tricky dating situation.
"The look he had on his face when he saw my gun! It was priceless! I never saw a man run that fast out of a bar!" Jane said, laughing so hard that she had tears in her eyes.
"He became rather nervous when you approached us. The fact that you are quite possessive of me has a natural effect that scares men away." Maura said, taking a sip of her red wine. "I think it gives you a sexy vibe and I do not understand why it scares them so." A light blush spreading across Maura's cheek. Not knowing if it came from the amount of wine she had drunk or the fact that she just called Jane sexy.
Blinking a few times, Jane tried to understand if she heard Maura correct or if she herself had drunk too much.
"Scientific research has shown that people who differ from each other in terms of character, values, and standards are often very suitable. It also appears that these couples often stay together longer than those who have everything in common." Maura rambled, trying to hide the blush and the comment she had made not that long ago. "With that in mind, it would be likely for us to be a good match if we liked women. We are very different. For example, you are bossy, have a diet which consists of coffee and fat and you think going to the shooting range is relaxing. Whereas I am polite, eat healthy and have absolutely never fired a gun before."
A little surprised by the turn the conversation had taken, Jane snorted at Maura's comment. "I'm bossy? You can be bossy yourself! You are just sweet and polity when you are bossing people around! And why would you think that we would be such a good match, apart from the fact that we are so different from each other?"
Putting her glass of wine on the coffee table, Maura leaned back into the couch. "Well, first we are best friends and I believe that if we did not like each other that we would not spend so much time together. Aside from that do our colleagues already think we are married and that I have you wrapped around my finger." Maura said laughing, winking at Jane to show that she was joking.
Jane opened her mouth to try and say something sarcastic, but Maura didn't let her.
"I think the fact that we are best friends weighs a lot in the decision. We know each other very well and we have been through a lot together. That makes the bond we have stronger. Although I have always wondered about how it would be to sleep with a woman, I never had the opportunity to actually act on it. Even in college."
A smile playing on her lips, Jane put her beer bottle on the desk behind the couch and laid her arm on the back of it. Smoothly moving closer towards Maura while she was still talking and had no idea of what was happening.
When Jane was so close to Maura that they were almost touching, Maura looked up at her and the words stopped coming out of her mouth. Jane didn't know where this bravery came from, but the only thing she could think about at this moment was the woman sitting in front of her. She put the hand that was lying on the back of the couch on Maura's cheek and softly caressed it. "Please stop talking," Jane said before she leaned in and captured Maura's lips in a sweet and tender kiss.
At first, Maura didn't know what was happening to her and when she felt Jane pull back it was time for her to take some action. Not giving Jane the chance to get that far, Maura grabbed her by the shirt and pulled her closer. Eagerly kissing her lips and deepening it instantly.
When the kiss became more hungry and heated, Jane tried to push Maura on her back on the couch, lying between her legs and positioning herself on top of her. When oxygen became necessary, Jane started kissing Maura's neck, which elated a moan from the doctor. Her cheeks where pink and her neck was flushed.
Maura put her hands in Jane's hair to keep her from stopping with was she was doing. Wrapping her legs around the woman on top of her, Maura tried to get Jane even closer to her than she already was.
Putting her hands on either side of Maura's head, Jane looked down and into dark hazel eyes. She could see the lust and passion in them. Putting Maura's arms around her neck she told her to hold on tight when she tried to stand up, with Maura wrapped around her body.
The strength and power Jane showed now aroused Maura even more and she buried her face in Janes neck where she began to plant soft kisses while going up to her ear. "Please, Jane. Get me to bed" Maura breathed in Jane's ear.
Thinking back to the night before, Jane could still feel the softness of Maura's skin when she slipped the blouse off her shoulders. She could hear Maura's moan when she kissed her way down her neck towards the top of Maura's breasts, while she sat on her lap on the bed. It was an amazing experience. However, it was not what friends were supposed to do. How good it might have felt, last night they might have screwed up their friendship.
For a long time now, Jane carried a secret with her. The fact that she had fallen for her friend a few years ago. One morning she woke up and saw her friend in a different light. Nothing special had happened, nobody was in danger or hurt, but something had changed. Maura's hazel eyes sparkled more, her hair was shinier, everything was different. She also felt very protective of her friends towards men. Nobody was good enough for her and she scared them away before Maura even noticed them.
In the weeks, months and years that followed after Jane became noticeable of her feelings, she tried to figure out if Maura might ever feel the same way about her. However, all the dates Maura had where men and they mostly functioned as a way to satisfy the needs she was having. The relationships didn't last long and as soon as they became serious she would not see or hear about any of them. Maura had a healthy sex life and Jane knew about it, but she had never heard Maura say anything about having a relationship with a woman. Or even just sleeping with one.
So after a while, Jane just gave up and settled with the thought of just staying friends with Maura. She rather had her in her life as just a friend, than not at all. Experience made her control her feelings, but de alcohol probably made her throw away the restraints she had for so long. It made all her willpower disappear and she no longer saw the danger of keeping her feelings secret.
However, last night she lost all control and here she was. Lying naked in bed next to her best friend and secret crush after a wild and passionate night of sex. What was she going to do? Stay here and wait for Maura to wake up or disappear and hope that both of them would never talk about it. She knew that the honorable option was to stay and for them to figure out what to do next and how to go from there, but Jane could not do it. She could not face the redemption that was waiting for them. She could not face the fact that she might lose Maura. Jane does not run away from anything, except this.
Deciding the best option was to leave, she slowly lifted the blanket off her body and slipped out of bed. Hoping Maura was still asleep she gradually let the blanket drop back on the bed. Turning around she started looking for her clothes that they discarded on their way. Finding her panties hanging on a lamp, she searched the floor for her socks and pants.
When Jane found all her clothes and was busy buttoning up her shirt, she heard a muffled voice behind her. It could only be one person and there went her secret getaway. Slowly she turned around to look if Maura really woke up or if she was talking in her sleep. There she saw the honey blond doctor, turned on her side with sleepy eyes and bed hair, looking at her with hurt in her eyes.
When Jane tried to secretly slip out of bed, she did not notice that Maura was awake. The honey blond lay on her stomach with her hair in front of her eyes, trying to listen to what the detective was doing. Maura could remember everything that had happened the night before. She knew she had drunk a lot, but she had never lost memories because of it.
Last night was a dream coming true for Maura. For a long time now she was in love with Jane. She never said anything because of the fact that Jane always became so defensive with the people around her when anyone would doubt her sexuality. However, sometimes she thought Jane felt something more. When feeling Jane's eyes on her when she thought Maura wasn't looking. Or when she felt her stare at her lips, thinking that she might lean in closer and would finally kiss her. Although she had so many feelings for the detective, she was not ready to risk the only friend she ever had for some feelings that would never be reciprocated.
That was until last night when a lot of alcohol and a slip of words turned the heat up and she saw a side of Jane she had never expected to ever see. When she saw Jane come closer towards her on the couch she became flustered and got even more lost in her scientific ramble. Thinking it was just the alcohol controlling Jane's feelings, she tried to hold back and not give in to Jane's advances. However, when Jane kissed her there was no stopping herself. You can ask a lot of a woman, but not to turn down the woman she was in love with and started kissing her.
Back in the present, Maura saw Jane turning around, with her shirt still slightly open. There was a sudden panic visible in Jane's eyes, not expecting Maura to be awake and seeing her escape plan vanish into thin air. Sitting up, holding the blanket against her chest, Maura tried to make eye contact with the woman standing in the dark in her bedroom.
Not able to control her emotions anymore, she tried the only thing she knew. "Please, Jane. Why won't you stay with me? Because you are all I need. Jane, just stay with me." Maura said with a tremble in her voice. Her eyes filling up with tears, after seeing Jane trying to sneak out of her bedroom after a passionate night together.
Jane did not expect Maura to be so emotional over the fact that she was sneaking out of the bedroom. If she really saw it as a one-night stand, why was she in tears over it? It broke her heart when she saw a lone tear slide down Maura's cheek, so in a few steps, she was by her side, sitting down next to her on the bed wiping the tear from her cheek with her thumb.
"Don't cry, Maura. You know I hate it when you cry." Jane said, still caressing the doctors' cheek. "Why are you crying?" she asked, her voice a calm whisper, hoping it would help the doctor.
Slowly looking up and locking her eyes with the raven-haired woman sitting next to her, Maura took a deep breath before saying what was on her mind. "I am crying over the fact that last night I slept with my best friend, who I caught sneaking out of my bedroom the next morning without saying a word. Did it mean so little to you that you would run away?" Maura answered, getting a little angry with every word she said. "Were you just searching for release or did you want to experiment and feel how it was like to sleep with a woman? Because if that is the case, then I really had a wrong image of you, Jane Rizzoli. I .."
Before Maura could say another word Jane put a finger against her lips, interrupting her rant. "Could you please stop talking so I can explain?" Jane asked her. Waiting for a nod from Maura, Jane continued. "I did not try to run away because I wanted to experiment with you or because I thought it was a one-night stand. I ran because I thought you would think all of that and I could not handle to hear that from you." Taking a deep breath to calm her nerves and to ready herself to put all her card on the table, she continued. "I've been in love with you for a long time now and last night was something I wanted to do for so long, but when I woke up this morning I was afraid that we weren't on the same page. You not reciprocating my feelings would have broken my heart and I'm not ready for that. I'm not ready to lose you, Maura."
Hearing Jane say she was in love with her, made Maura smile. Everything she had ever dreamed of was coming together right at this moment. Before Jane could say or do anything, the doctor put her hand on her cheek and softly brushed her thumb over it, hoping it would reassure the woman sitting in front of her and help her relax a little. Not being able to control her impulses anymore, Maura slid her hand in wild dark curls and gently pulled Jane closer towards her. Not knowing where to look, Maura's eyes scanned every inch of Jane's face to memorize it and to never forget how it all started. When there was no space between them, Maura could feel Jane's breath on her lips and saw that the detective had closed her eyes. Not wanting to waste any more time, she kissed her. Slowly at first, but soon it deepened and became more passionate.
Breaking the kiss so both women could take a breath, Maura knew she needed to reassure Jane and tell her how she felt. "I love you too, Jane. I'm in love with you. You don't have to run from me. Please, just stay with me." Maura whispered against lips before kissing them again and lying back down, taking Jane with her to show her how much she loved her.
