The Inspector scanned the tavern slowly, slightly groggy from the bash he received from a revolutionary. As his gazed reached the door he noticed a young man that looked oddly familiar. He was leaning against the barricade, away from the other men. He seemed to be hiding something. The man shifted slightly, revealing his chocolate brown eyes as he looked nervously around. Javert was hit with a wave of recognition. Eponine. What was she doing here? Protecting her 'Marius' no doubt. They hadn't parted on the best terms yesterday. She demanded he didn't go.

"They're my friends" she persisted "You can't do this. I can't have the people i care about fighting each other. You're my friend too. You can't do this to me!"

But Javert's duty was to uphold the law and he couldn't back out of this assignment. All he could do was simply reply "I must do what the law requires of me." as he turned and walked away.

It pained him to know he had hurt Eponine. She was the only person he had ever cared about. He saw so much of himself in her. His stubborn disposition and undying commitment, though she was committed to her friends and siblings rather than the law. Had she been born a man Javert was certain she would have made an excellent officer. But here she was, at the barricade, disguised, and fighting with the revolutionaries.

It was all because of Marius. "Marius" He scoffed. The idiot boy couldn't see how blatantly obvious it was Eponine loved him. He remembered the look in her eyes he'd seem for years as she gazed longingly at the boy, though recently it'd oddly started to wain.

Heavy boots sound on the cobblestones and Javert smirked. The army was coming, and this uprising would soon be quenched. He sat calmly as the musket fire raged, but always made sure Eponine was at least in his peripherals. He didn't want anything to happen to her. As the battle continued she moved out of his view and a bit of worry crept into Javert's mind. Then he heard it. A shot followed by a small cry barely audible. Horror poured over Javert at his recognition of the voice. He struggled against his bonds with all his might, filled with rage and adrenaline. In a minute he broke free and sprinted toward where Eponine's cry had sounded, his hands still bound. He reached her and knelt next to her. Her side was bleeding and there was barely any life left in her eyes. Everything surrounding him melted away. She was all that mattered, all he cared for, all he loved. He loved her with his entire heart and cursed himself for being such a fool. He should have realized earlier, he shouldn't have let them part on bad terms yesterday.

"Dear God, Eponine what've you done?" He said softly "Why did you come here?"

She smiled sadly and stared into his eyes with her deep brown ones.

"You came to protect Marius didn't you?" He said sadly. He knew she didn't have the same feelings for him that he had for her. "You love him."

Eponine laughed slightly causing her to cough."I came to protect you, you idiot" She whispered. "I love you."

"Oh, Eponine i love you too." Javert confessed. "If i could only make a deal with God to swap our places. I'd do anything"
At that moment someone cut his bonds and Javert instantly enveloped Eponine in a gentle embrace, silently thanking the man.

"Just hold me." She pleaded "Don't leave."

"Anything for you." He replied

He leaned down and gently kissed her. He felt her smile against his lips and then go cold. He parted and looked into her beautiful eyes as they stared blankly into the void. Javert closed them and kissed her forehead. He held her and wept. He hadn't cried since he was a young boy. Now the only thing he loved had gone from this world and it seemed that if he had cried every day of his life, the amount of tears would never equal the agony he felt.
