Consistency

Sometimes she wakes up in the middle of the night and watches him sleep. Or maybe it's a routine. She watches the way his eyelids flutter briefly against his cheeks, every strand of hair is delicate, every arrogant line of his face is smoothed out. He look tired and youthful all at once, and she doesn't know if it's love, attraction, or consistency that pulls her towards him, the shell of her ear ghosting the edge of his heart.

In her half awake state, it's beating, and she doesnt know how long it will be like this until she wakes up and she's alone with memories and empty rooms and little paper cranes that remind her of a little girl's smile. He'll go back in the art gallery of her life in a picture frame that will be more tenderly worn around the edges because there are lots of pieces of herself in the artwork. And the gallery will stretch on and on and on for eternity.

She has watched him since he was small, her little prince turned king, and she finds that some things are relatively irritating to part with. So in a gesture that she likes to imagine is human, she presses her lips to his temple, and in response, his fingers lightly cradle the edge of her waist.

When she wakes up they will complain about the sheets, the lack of space, the unnecessary cuddling and whose hand or leg was where. but in this moment, thoughts aside, it is just them, and they don't have to pretend here.

Because they are not normal lovers, witches, devils, kings- them, and as he whispers her name against the crown of her hair, C.C. pretends that he didn't say it correctly, pretends that his touch isn't saving her. And in return, Lelouch contents himself with calling her a witch instead of a woman he just might have come to love.

C.C. is known to sleep with ghosts and voices in her head. It's time for a change.
