WHEN BOOTH MET BRENNAN

by Queen Thumbs

FADE IN:

DOCUMENTARY FOOTAGE

of an elderly SEELEY BOOTH and TEMPERANCE BRENNAN.

They are seated side-by-side on a loveseat, facing the camera.

BOOTH

Right from the beginning, I knew Bones was The One.

BRENNAN

I took a little convincing.

BOOTH

Seven years of convincing!

BRENNAN

Seven years, four months and eight days, to be exact.

BOOTH

We met through work. I was an agent with the FBI investigating an old murder case.

A colleague suggested I get a fresh opinion from a forensic anthropologist, Dr. Temperance Brennan.

BRENNAN

(smiles wistfully)

Which is me.

BOOTH

She was the best in the world.

(They look at each other.)

BRENNAN

But you didn't know that at the time.

BOOTH

No. But it's true.

BRENNAN

(To camera)

It is.

BOOTH

We solved the case and the guy was caught.

BRENNAN

But then we had an argument over some evidence. I slapped him!

BOOTH

And we didn't see each other for nearly a year.

BRENNAN

13 months less a week. But after that, we spent five years as partners solving murders.

BOOTH

And I was madly in love with her the whole time.

BRENNAN

That whole time.

(She gazes at him for a moment.)

So was I, but I couldn't admit it. I wasn't very good at relationships, and I was afraid

to change the best thing I had.

BOOTH

The first time I spoke up, she turned me down. She thought our work as partners mattered

more than how we felt.

BRENNAN

It scared me, and I started focusing more on my research.

BOOTH

I dated a few other women, but I never really moved on.

BRENNAN

Then his grandfather died.

BOOTH

That was a bad time.

BRENNAN

(Reaches over and takes his hand.)

He wouldn't leave his house. So, I went to find him one day.

BOOTH

She let herself in. Then she took my hand, led me to the couch, and laid my head in her lap.

BRENNAN

I never left after that.

BOOTH

She never left, and we've been together 47 years.

BRENNAN

(She looks at him.)

40 years, Booth.

BOOTH

I count from when we met.

(He looks at her. They hold the gaze for a couple of beats, slight smirks on their faces.)

BOOTH

47 years.

(Brennan sighs, links her arm around his, and turns to the camera, smiling contentedly.)
