To Neville, Harry was the boy that was genuinely nice to him his first year. Harry was the one who always thought the best of Neville, even before Hermione. The one who smiled kindly at him even when Neville could tell Harry had no personal interest in what he was saying. (Neville didn't care; it was just nice to have someone that listened.)

Yes, Neville was aware that he cared a great deal for Harry as a friend. But...only as a friend, right? It wasn't as though he... loved... No, that was impossible!
