Summary: It would never work. (They're too different.) Kutner/Thirteen
A/N: ...um, yea. A five minute drabble, one of my many attempts to put off getting ready for school. Probably not my best, but take from it what you will. Enjoy
It would never work.
She insists on reminding herself of this every day, every time she thinks she might be getting too attached, at those odd and rare (and fleeting) moments in the day when she is not in his presence, where she finds herself missing him.
It would never work.
They're too different—they are the definition of polar opposites.
She shoves him away whenever he tries to pull her close. But he's the only one, she thinks, with whom she shares actual intimacy; the only guy (person, she amends) who seems to be able to bring out the side of her that isn't embarrassed by and doesn't shut down at the prospect of letting someone hold her, letting someone touch her even when there's no need, even when there isn't any actual sex involved.
He is an open book, forever trying to decipher her cryptic messages. She doesn't mean to be difficult, but she's always been the girl who needs to push boundaries and stretch her limits. He lives within limits, never stepping out too far to cause waves or disrupt sacred ground.
He presses soft kisses to her shoulder, careful; she nips at his earlobe and drags her nails across his back, hasty and unconcerned. He always professes to never wanting to hurt her while she can't help trying to find ways to leave a mark on his skin. She tells him to forget about her and what she means to him; but she is a hypocrite, who will always remember how he makes her feel.
It would never work, she insists silently even as she reaches for his hand, interlocking her fingers with his. She is in possession of the profound ability to ruin all things good before they can actually come to fruition.
"Hey."
"Hey." She closes her eyes as he leans forward to kiss her forehead, an action that is all too kind—and meaningful and gentle and unassuming and caring—for her to handle.
He's too good for her, she thinks.
It would never work.
