"It wasn't me."
Lily paused after entering the common room, and gave Sirius a confused look. "What?"
"It wasn't me."
"It wasn't you for what?" Moving forward, she sat across from two of the Marauders, Sirius Black and James Potter. James was raising his eyebrow at his friend, while Sirius had a serious expression on his face.
"It was James."
"Oi!" James cried. "I resent that!"
Sirius waved his best mate off. "Other than that…Hello, Evans."
Lily narrowed her eyes. Setting her books on the table, Lily said, "Black, I have no idea what you're talking about."
Sirius nodded, looking unconcerned. "It was still James."
Lily glanced at James, who gave her a bemused look and shrugged his shoulders.
"Er…okay," Lily said, deciding to play along. She hesitated. "What did James do, again?"
Sirius smirked at her. "Everything."
"Everything! Hey-"
"It's alright, Jamesie," Sirius cut across, "Evans here knows it was you. Give it up."
"Don't call me Jamesie."
"Alright, Jamesie."
"Hey," James shot back, "isn't your middle name Orion?"
"Boys, boys-" James and Sirius turned to Lily, "-cut it out. Now Black," Lily turned to face Sirius, "I'm going to ask one more time. What did James do?"
Sirius sighed, stretching back into his chair and kicking his feet up on the table. Giving her a crooked smile he said, "Everything, Evans."
Lily slowly got up, giving Sirius and awkward and annoyed look. She headed towards the girls' dormitory, calling back, "Sure…"
"Oh! Evans!" Lily glanced over. "You might want to wait a few minutes before going into the Great Hall at dinner. There's going to be a prank," Sirius grinned, "it will be spectacular."
"Oh, let me guess," Lily rolled her eyes, "it was James?"
"Nope," Sirius winked. "All me. Oh, and Evans-!" Lily paused, one foot on the stairs.
"Yes, Black?"
"You do realize, that you've been calling him James this whole time? None of that Potter rubbish?"
Lily froze, feeling her face go red. "Whatever, Black, Potter."
Laughter followed her as she went up the stairs. Entering her dormitory, Lily sighed, ready to fall on her bed, but something stopped her. A small box sat on her bed, and when Lily picked it up and checked for a tag, there was none. Curious, she opened it. Her eyes lit up. Inside the box sat two delicate earrings, each a dazzling shade of green. Lily furrowed her brow. Who was it from?
Suddenly, Sirius' words came flooding back to her.
It was James.
Smiling, Lily held the earring up to the light. The same sentence echoed in her head over and over.
It was James. It was James.
Sighing with contentment, Lily lay the box down and closed her eyes.
It was James.
Thank you, James.
