A.N. Naminé is a great character. After watching the ending of Re: Chain of Memories and listening to her talk to Sora, I felt the need to expand upon the obvious feelings conflicting inside of her. The tone of her voice during the ending sequence is shaky, and it sounds as if she could break down at any moment throughout the whole thing. Of course, she's wouldn't allow herself to do that in front of Sora and his friends. But, once he falls asleep in the pod...
There would be tears…
…Even though he asked her not to cry.
There would be tears…
…Because she would be alone forevermore.
There would be tears…
…Because even though it was the right thing, it was unbearable to let him go.
As she stood there with her hands on a glass pod, she wished she could somehow step through the wall separating them and take his hand. All she wanted was to hold it, to feel close to him for just a little longer. To feel close to her dear friend, her only friend—the first person to ever care about her and treat her as someone important and not use her like a tool. But she couldn't blame him for his choice, as she said herself: anybody would choose that.
Tears rolled down her cheeks. "It's okay now, because you're asleep and can't see me, right? So you won't feel like you're letting me down." She smiled at the memory, but then the uncontrollable sobs came. She didn't want to be alone again. Now that she had a taste of companionship, she knew she couldn't go back to her solitude. She couldn't lose him now, and that idea was intoxicating her with venomous motive. At the cost of guilt and betrayal, she could make him hers forever.
We all really trust you.
Her thoughts came to a halt, as did her sobs, and she let out a gasp. "That's right. You said that. You trust me." A crooked smile formed on her lips and she blinked, releasing a fresh stream of tears from her eyes. "And yet you're so vulnerable…" She murmured. But she knew she was more vulnerable than he, for if she let him leave, she'd suffocate under the deathly grip of loneliness.
The way I felt then, that was no lie.
Another smile—one of pure joy—crossed her face as she recalled the happiness he felt towards her. But as quickly as the smile had come, it faded. "But if I go through with this, you won't remember…any feelings of happiness towards me." She rested her forehead against the glass.
When I wake up, I'll find you.
She let out a single, small and mocking laugh at herself for believing those words. "You can't find someone who doesn't exist, Sora." Her eyes snapped shut as his name left her lips. There was a pain in her chest.
Promise me, Naminé.
"No!" She suddenly screamed in distress. Her hands balled into fists and pounded the glass. "I can't take that risk!" Her fists relaxed and her palms were against the cold and smooth surface once more, her thumb gently rubbing its surface where his cheek could be seen through it. "I'm sorry, Sora…" She whispered as she stepped back, her smile distorted by both happiness and sorrow. "You'll be happy." She told him. "We'll be happy." She corrected. "Together."
There would be no more tears…
…Because he asked her not to cry.
There would be no more tears…
…Because she'd be with him forevermore.
There would be no more tears…
…Because monsters never cry.
A.N. I really adore Naminé's character, however it's quite evident she is emotionally distraught. Nevertheless, she deserves to be happy, right? Hope you enjoyed this short story!
