Lukas felt hot tears run down his cheeks. "This is all my fault…" He felt dizzy. The room was spinning and dipping around him. He gripped the edge of the Dane's hospital bed to keep from stumbling. "If I had just offered to drive him… this wouldn't have happened. It's all my fault." Lukas wiped tears from his face with the back of his hand.
"He was drunk; he was going to do something reckless anyway." Emil put one hand on his brother's shoulder. He had to comfort Lukas, even though he was unsettled by the Norwegian's rare display of emotion.
He swatted Emil's hand away. "I want to be alone." Lukas glared at his brother. Emil nodded slowly and backed out the door, closing it behind him. When no one was around to see him, Lukas sat at the Dane's bedside and cried. He cried because he knew he had made a mistake. A mistake that had endangered the life of someone he adored. He desperately wished that Mathias would wake up so he could talk to him. What if Mathias never woke up? The thought forced a whimper from Lukas's lips.
He felt a warm hand over his. Lukas looked up, allowing his teary eyes to adjust. A wave of relief flooded over him. Mathias had his eyes open, and he was looking directly at Lukas.
"Mat, I'm so sorry." Lukas wailed. He squeezed Mathias's hand. "If I had offered to drive you home you wouldn't have run that light and gotten hit."
"Nah." The corners of his mouth lifted up in his signature grin. "Don't say depressing stuff like that Nor." He sounded horrible. His voice was quiet and scratchy. Each word sounded painful. "But when I get out I expect a 'welcome back' party." Mathias laughed.
Lukas smiled faintly. "I think we can do that." He cleaned off his face with his sleeve.
It was quiet for a moment, with only the soft beeping of the machines in the background. Neither of them was quite sure what to say. Nothing they could think of seemed appropriate.
"Um… Mathias, I..." Lukas paused. He felt nervous all of a sudden. "I…" Lukas stopped. The beeping was getting slower and slower. His eyes widened. The next thing he knew, a doctor was rushing into the room. Lukas stood by and watched as the doctor attempted to save his friend.
"I love you."
Lukas never got to tell Mathias how he really felt.
Okay. Well. Once again I'm uploading something at 3:00 in the morning. So. Yeah. Bye.
