The Equestrian War of Succession

Prelude

Mid-Harvest, 1005

The sounds of thousands of pairs of boots marching in unison was nearly deafening, and could be heard for a mile. Lines upon lines of men wearing dark blue coats and black pants marched in their respective groups, each headed by a single soldier carrying a flag in the very front line. -

This flag was black, with two blue lines horizontally crossing it at the top and bottom. At the center, was a crescent that had wings and a horn, topped with a five-point star, rising from the edges and middle, the symbol of the Lunar Republic.

The north side of the field beheld a similar sight, but the soldier wore scarlet jackets, and their flag showed the image of a red circle divided into two by an orange horn and enveloped at the bottom by bright orange wings, all over a white background. This was the flag of the Solar Empire.

Between these two armies was a field of gentle hills, with the beginnings of a forest on the eastern edge of the battlefield. The armies formed battle lines opposite their enemy, artillery cannons lining up behind them.

Bombardments covered the armies' advance, and the Lunar Republic stopped on the top of one of the hills, the men forming three lines per each battalion. Once the Solar Empire's troops came into range, their opponents raised their muskets, a brand new gunpowder weapon that had been developed by an overseas power, adapted by the larger nations for their own use.

At once, loud cracks resonated across the Lunar lines, smoke emitting from the end of the firearms. Entire rows of the enemy were mowed down by the wave of metal bullets.

The Solar Empire's men were quick to prepare their own attack, and the two armies exchanged volleys for twenty minutes, before the order to "Fix bayonets!" was called out on the Solar side, and the the ground shook with the battle cries and running of the forty thousand men in red, quickly joined by the other forty thousand men in blue uniforms.

At once, the two armies collided, and fierce melee fight ensued. The Lunar Republic soon gained the advantage, as the Solar soldiers had been tired from their long march to this battle.

Not long after they grew exhausted, the red-clad soldier began to rout. One by one, the battalions of the Solar Empire began to disengage from the Lunar Republic troops, who formed battle lines to fire at the enemy's retreat.

The day was won, and the battle belonged to the Lunar Republic.
