Drabble #86: Steal

The members of Avalanche watched in awe as Aeris and Yuffie started racing down the path, waving cheerfully to all the members they passed on their way. Cloud looked up in time to see the two young women stop by the steps with Yuffie jumping up and down and shouting that she had won the race. Aeris had her hands on her knees as she attempted to catch her breath, her smile wide and bright. Cloud found himself watching as if in slow motion as she straightened up. She glanced at him and waved cheerfully and Cloud found himself waving back.
The disturbing thing was, he knew exactly why he had responded. He was usually so indifferent to everyone that any sign of acknowledgement and conversation was amazing. With Aeris though, smiling and waving seemed natural. She had that effect on people. Sadness and fear just disappeared from their minds whenever she was around.
She had stolen everybody's hearts. But Cloud had fallen hardest.
