"I had a wonderful time tonight," Reggie said happily.
Brock pulled him into a tight hug. "Glad you did, because that dinner was really expensive," he laughed. He prepared for one of his cheesy pick-up lines, getting down on one knee, and going full bishie-mode. "But I'd pay any price, any price at all just to make you happy, my sweet love!" he babbled.
Reggie's face went scarlet, and he rolled his eyes. Typical Brock behaviour! He still wasn't used to his boyfriend's rather grand displays of affection, even if they had been together for almost a year now.
Brock got up and took Reggie's hand. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to embarrass you just then. Come on now, how about we head home?" he said apologetically.
"OK." Reggie replied, letting himself be led by Brock.
Unbeknownst to them, someone was watching them, from a short distance away…
The next day, a strange note was slipped through the letterbox, addressed to Reggie.
Reggie,
Come and meet me at the Pokémon gym, alone, this evening. I have something I need to tell you.
This is odd, Reggie thought. Who could the note be from? And why of all places, did they want to tell him something important at the gym? Unless…
"Hey, what's that you've got?" Brock asked, peeking over his boyfriend's shoulder.
"Someone gave me this strange note, telling me to meet them at the gym this afternoon," Reggie replied. "Should I go?" he asked, presenting the note.
"'Come alone?' Sounds like it's from some weirdo," he said suspiciously. "Wait…If they want to meet you at the gym, I think I know who it might be."
"You do?"
"Yeah. It's probably Maylene." Brock replied. "She's the only one that should be at the gym in the evening, since she closes up then. Maybe you should and see what she wants. I mean, you are sort of friendly with her," Brock said.
"Alright then," Reggie agreed. Though he still wasn't sure what to expect from going. He was relatively friendly with her, but he hadn't properly spoken to her since she lost her confidence as a gym leader. Why did she need to see him now?
That evening, Reggie stood waiting at the entrance to the gym. He was quickly joined by Maylene. But instead of sporting her usual tank top and joggers, she had a pink dress with puff sleeves and a large rose at the bodice on, and pink heels.
"You really came," she said happily.
Reggie rolled his eyes and shifted about nervously. "Yeah. So, uh, what was that thing you wanted to tell me?"
Maylene took a deep breath in and gazed deep into Reggie's eyes. "Reggie…I love you!" she proclaimed. "I've been wanting to tell you for ages and ages, but I could never think of an appropriate time. And then I saw you with Brock last night, and he was being all sweet to you, the way I want you to be towards me! So…" she trailed off, looking hopeful.
Reggie was taken aback. "So what? You want me to break up with him and be with you?" he said in disbelief.
"Yes! I mean, no! I…I want to know if you love me too."
Reggie shook his head. "Maylene, the answer is no. I love Brock." He said bluntly. "What I have with him means so much to me. Our love is far more important to me than your little crush."
Maylene started to cry, her body wracked by enormous sobs.
"OK," she said finally. "Go and be happy with him, then."
"You mean that?" Reggie replied.
"Yeah. You deserve to be happy, Reggie." She said.
