L sat in his room, staring at the recordings of Light's confession at the hands of Batman. He sighed. Somewhere deep down inside, he had harbored some small shred of hope that Light could be saved from the dark path he set himself on. But those thoughts were futile. L had tried his best, but there had been no other way to end Kira's reign. These thoughts were suddenly interrupted by the buzz of the phone. L answered it, holding it by the top and dangling it next to his ear. "Watari? What is it?"
"L, it's me," said a voice that was distinctly not Watari's. A voice that struck fear in the hearts of all criminals in Gotham. A voice that belonged to Bruce Wayne, known to criminals everywhere as the Batman.
"How did you get this number?" L asked, actually curious. This was supposed to be a secure line that only he and Watari had access to.
"Hacked your files. Not so funny when you're on the receiving end, is it, L?"
L sighed. "Yes, I suppose I deserve that, Wayne-san. Now what is it you called for?"
"I need a favor. I'm sure you've heard of the most recent Joker attack?" Batman asked, already knowing the answer. Four days ago in Gotham, the Joker had kidnapped four politicians in town for a conference and held them hostage, threatening to make them test subjects of his new toxin unless Batman came and surrendered. Being Batman, he chose option C: sneaking out the politicians and arresting the Joker and his sidekick, Harley Quinn.
"Yes, I have. I must say, excellent work. There was only a 6 percent chance that you could free any of the hostages, and a 2.5 percent chance of getting all of them out, yet you did it without one of them getting so much as a scratch. Of course, am I to guess that the reason of this call is due to you yourself sustaining some sort of injury that renders you unable to fight?" deduced L.
"How did you… Never mind. Yes, you're right. The politicians may have gotten out unscathed, but while I was fighting the Joker and Harley, he doused me with his new toxin just before I subdued him. I've been in intensive care at the JLA Watchtower ever since recovering. I need you to watch over Gotham for me for two or three weeks. Nightwing's been watching over it for the past few days, but he has to return to Jump City within the next day or so. Some trouble with Slade again or something. Can you do it?"
"Of course I can. Tell Nightwing I'll be there in 8 hours," L said. After helping L out with the Kira case, this was the least L could do.
"Thanks, L. I owe you one again," Batman said.
"It's no problem. I do have some very important requests for you, though," L said, chewing on his thumb.
"Sure. What do you need?"
"First, the access code and location of the Bat-Cave. While there's a 67 percent chance I could probably crack it given time, it would take too long. Second, I want all your files on cases you're working on, and detailed analyses on all villains I'm likely to encounter. Third, the contact information of Commissioner Gordon and any other trustworthy police officers."
"Alright, I can do that," said Batman. "Do you need anything else?"
L paused, then took his thumb out of his mouth and reached over to a bowl on his desk and grabbed a piece of licorice. "Yes, there is one last thing. Do you have any candy?"
