Okay, okay, I know that Infinity War came out last year but I'M STILL MOURNING OKAY?! I dunno, I couldn't think of something to write for The Spider Pranks so I decided to write this depressing story! Yay? I'm sure you Romanogers fans will enjoy this… probably.
Disclaimer: I do not own anyone in this one-shot at all!
Steve kneeled over Vision's broken, grey body desperately, hoping that it was all just a dream. How could they lose? He could feel tears pooling in his eyes, his vision going blurry. Bucky, Sam, T'challa, Wanda, and Vision were all gone. Where was Natasha? Was she gone too? So much was uncertain. Tony and Spider-Man were unaccounted for and who knows how many were wiped out from every nook and cranny of the universe. How could they let this happen?
Steve was pulled from his thoughts when he heard familiar footsteps behind him. Natasha. She was alive. Feeling the overwhelming numbness and hopelessness settle in, he collapsed with one arm still draped on Vision's dead body.
"What is this?" Rhodey asked, walking up to the clearing. "What the hell is happening?" Nobody answered. Nobody wanted to face the truth of what had happened. Steve breathed heavily.
"Oh god." Steve said quietly. Nat kneeled down next to him helplessly. They had failed.
Steve laid exhausted on his old bed in the Avenger's Tower, despair filled his every thought. His soul felt heavy and he wanted dearly just to lay down and believe that it was all a dream. A dream that he and Natasha would laugh about when he woke. But it wasn't a dream. It was all horrifyingly real.
"Hey." Steve felt a small hand fit perfectly in his own. Natasha. Thank whatever being was still out there that Natasha was still there. He wouldn't know what he would do if Sam, Wanda, Vision, and Natasha were all gone. They had become his new family and now everyone but Natasha was gone.
"Don't give up on up now, Steve." Nat's soothing voice calmed his mind. "We can still fix this."
"Any news on Tony and Spider-Man?" Steve opened his eyes to look at Natasha.
"Nothing yet." Natasha replied solemnly and got into bed. "He's still so young."
"What?"
"Spider-Man. He was just recently 16 years old." Steve stared at her, shocked. "I confronted him not long after the battle in Germany. After I had escaped from Ross and made my way back to New York, I followed Spider-Man back to a small apartment building in Queens. He's not exactly inconspicuous. His name's Peter Parker. He's a sweet kid, he didn't deserve to be caught up in all of this."
"I dropped an airport terminal on a 15 year old?!" Steve remembered suddenly as Natasha nodded. "Was he not mad?"
"No, when we met up the next day at one of the coffee shops around his school, he had said, and I quote, "It was SO cool! Captain America was just there like BAM! BAM! His shield flying like WOOSH, WOOSH! And! And! He even talked to me!" He's a lot like Coulson, just a lot more naive and innocent." Steve smiled softly as Natasha fondly recalled a few of her good memories. "I hope he's okay."
After a few more moments of silence Natasha spoke up again.
"Fury's gone. So's Hill. Rocket said-"
"Who?"
"The talking raccoon. His names Rocket." Nat would have laughed at Steve's confusion if she wasn't so filled with grief. "He said that he has friends up in Space. He doesn't know whether or not they're still alive."
"Would you let me take away your pain?"
Nat nodded. Steve wrapped his arms around Nat as tears started to fall from her eyes. She had lost so much. They had lost so much. So for the night, he just held her in his embrace as they warded off each other's nightmares.
Oh boi. I did something. Hehe… I was inspired by this song I heard called Would You Let Me by Folded Dragons. Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this short little one-shot! :)
Feel free to leave a review and/or helpful criticism! I appreciate all of them! :D
