Kirk observed Spock instructing young ensigns and smiled at his dignified manner and the sparkling eyes of young minds that were trying to take in all the impressions and information they were given.
He fiddled with the gift in his hand he had bought and waited until all the people previously surrounding Spock had scurried off on various assignments.
"Good job Mr Spock you really have a natural talent for teaching."
"Thank you captain, although there is nothing natural about it as I am well trained in the art of discourse and instruction."
"I know, I was just trying to give you a compliment."
"Oh. I see. Of course, humans do have the need to encourage one another to boost their self confidence and with that increase their effort. As I am always working more than adequately it isn't necessary but I am grateful for the gesture."
Kirk refused the urge to chuckle at his Vulcan friend and swallowed the laughter already halfway up his throat and made a quick cough instead.
He looked if Spock had noticed but since he rarely made any facial movements it was impossible to tell.
"Anyway, I was wondering if you might have some time for a cup of coffee, or at least join me while I have some."
"Of course captain. Shall we go right away?"
Almost like a child with his never ending questions, Kirk felt a sting of brotherly love when he looked at Spock's dark brown eyes looking at him.
"That was the idea."
Spock nodded slightly and they walked in silence, side by side to the cafeteria. Spock sat down at an empty table while Kirk grabbed himself a cup of coffee and came back to sit down opposite of Spock.
"Okay here's the thing" Kirk started and Spock looked at him, tilting his head a little "I know you don't celebrate birthdays but I still felt I wanted to, I don't know, acknowledge your birthday anyway."
For once Spock didn't instantly shower him with questions; instead he just kept looking at Kirk but with what seemed like a glimpse of curiosity in his eyes.
"Okay so without further ado, happy birthday Spock." he said and handed over the gift.
Kirk could've sworn he'd seen a small smirk come over Spock's lips and leaned forward a little to see his reaction as he opened it.
Spock, slowly and delicately, undressed the little box-shaped thing from its wrappers, making sure every piece of paper was neatly stacked on the table.
When he finally finished and let his lean fingers run over the top of it, opening the lid, Kirk held his breath.
"I must say that I am impressed with your ability to find something that I could have use for."
Kirk bit his tongue so not to smile too much.
"Thank you Jim" he said while looking up at Kirk.
"You're welcome Spock. Happy birthday."
