He was dead.
Their minds immediately went into hunters mode. Cover your tracks, sign any documents, remove any valuables, wrap the deceased, place on top of a wooden mountain, flick the lighter and burn. The morning sunlight was appearing over their heavy shoulders when the last of the scraps turned to dust.
Everything they did was methodical.
Out of habit, they opened a bottle and raised a beer to the deceased.
Out of habit, they filled a tin bucket with cold water and quenched out any remaining flames.
Out of habit, they headed back into the cabin.
Out of habit, they sat in their usual seats. Sam on the chair beside the door, Dean on the couch and Bobby... Bobby...
He was dead.
Their Bobby, their friend, their family was dead.
They stared at this chair as it lay empty waiting for an occupant that would never appear. Everything suddenly became real. Dean's stomach churned when he realised what they had just done to his friend. They had treated him like he was just another hunter when he wasn't.
Sam's bottom lip quivered and his eyes glistened at the sight of the empty chair. They were idiots to think they could treat today like any other day and get away with it. He gulped back his tears and looked to his brother for support but Dean looked just as dazed as he was. He turned his stare to his hands. He couldn't bear to look at the chair again.
This was worse than when they lost their father. That time Dean was angry and blamed himself. That time Dean took his anger out on his car but this time was different. He didn't feel any anger. He didn't feel any blame. There was a pain in his heart that pinched his chest. He knew if he didn't look away from the chair now, he would start to cry. He slowly turned to his little brother and noticed he was trying to look away too.
Their best friend was dead.
