The bullet wounds burned. Matsuda, that bastard! Who did he think he was shooting at?! He, Light Yagami, was god! …Right?
No. No, with every hurried step, Light realized he was not god. Near's words were seeping through into his mind. You are nothing more than a murderer who has confused himself with god!
And it was true. Who was he kidding. He was no god. He was no more than a man with a notebook. Memories flooded back to him; memories of an innocent boy. A high school kid, just trying to block out the bad in the world with his studies. Then, he found this notebook. The notebook that had twisted his life into nothing more than twists and turns of lies and deceit.
What happened to that boy? The top student, amazing his friends with his knowledge. The university heartthrob, somehow luring in all women…
Evil seeped into his heart. The evil from this damn notebook; the evil now known as Kira. Why did Ryuk have to drop this piece of shit pad of paper?!
Because I was bored. Ryuk's response to this question rang clearly in his head. Ah, yes. This had all started with mere boredom. Now look what it had turned into.
Light's steps slowed. The police would not catch up to him now. And if they did, so what? Nothing mattered anymore.
"It looks like you loose, Light." Ryuk was sitting on a building not far from him. Light didn't actually hear these words, but he knew in his heart that Ryuk had to be saying them. "Remember when we first met, and I said I would be the one to write your name in my notebook…?"
Light did remember. He thought nothing of it at the time. Thoughts of a "new world" were occupying the attention then. Now, fear pierced his heart. Kira would have no more victories.
"If they put you in prison, I don't know when you'd die. And I don't want to sit around waiting." Knowing the shinigami well, Light knew everything was drawing to a close. He looked at the staircase in front of him. "You'll die here…"
Lying down on the cold, hard steps, Light heaved a sigh. So, this was how it would end? All of this work, for nothing? Well, he supposed it was fitting. After all, this was nothing more than a cure for boredom, right?
"Well, Light…" Ryuk's final words rang through Light's imagination, not knowing how real they were. "it's been interesting."
He felt his heart pound, hard, in his chest. Eyes wide, Light knew it was time to go. Eyes slipping shut, Light didn't know what to think. The user of this notebook can neither go to heaven or to hell. Where was he about to go, then? Well, he guessed he'd find out soon enough…
