Once Upon A Dream
By Brooke Buffington, or Shining Star (pen name)

Chapter One:

Jesse Raven Hawk was walking down the street of his hometown, Somerset, KY. He had just returned from his 5 year stay at his friend's ranch in Springtown, AZ, 15 miles southwest of Phoenix. All of the sudden, a gunshot occurs. He reels around to see who shot. "Oh, shit!", he says, "Daniel Thorne!" Daniel Thorne is his worst enemy from childhood. They had fought throughout school, and for one year after, until Thorne had been arrested and sent to prison for armed robbery. 3 months later, Jesse had decided to move to Arizona and stay with a friend who needed help running his ranch after his father had been killed in a drive- by shooting in Phoenix. Jesse pulled out his shotgun and fired back, just barely missing Daniel, who shot back, and missed, also. Jesse fired again, getting Daniel in his right leg. Daniel fell, and shot again from the ground, this time hitting Jesse in the back.

Jesse feels like something is taking him swirling up into the clouds. All he sees is this white misty looking stuff all around him.

"What happened? Where am I?" he asks. "You are in a place where you will be well taken care of." A deep, booming voice says, coming from seemingly nowhere. "Who are you, where are you?" Jesse asks. "That is none of your concern. You have done well, Raven Hawk, but not well enough. Would you like to redeem yourself?" "Redeem myself? How? Why?" "You are a good man, but for you to go to Heaven, or the Happy Hunting Grounds, as your people call it, you need to learn some compassion, to help others in their time of need. Would you like to do this? Or would you prefer to remain in Limbo for an eternity?" "I think I'll take the 'redeem myself' option. It sounds more appealing." "Good choice, Raven, good choice." "What do I have to do?" Jesse asks. "I am sending you to a place you have been before, only in a different situation. These people will need your help. You will know what to do. I give you one year. If in that year, you can show these people your compassion and help them in their times of trial, you will be redeemed. At that time, you will choose your path. Whether it be to stay on earth for the remainder of your life, or to come to Heaven with me, that will be your choice. One year is all that you will need." "Thank you, I think." "Oh, you do not have to think it, you know." The spirit said wisely. "Your journey has begun, NOW!"
