Bernadette stared, open-mouthed at her boyfriend. She didn't know what to say. Howard stared back at her, hope evident in his deep blue eyes.
"Bernie?"
"No! Howard, I don't want to marry you."
"Oh. When do you want to get married?"
"I don't wanna marry you."
That clearly stung.
"What did I do?"
"Everything is just so intense with you. I want someone who treats me like a person, not a princess."
"But, you're my princess!"
"Oh, for God's sake. Look, I want to break up."
"No, no, you don't mean that.."
She edged around him, as though he was contagious. He started going after her, even though he was still on his knees. Eventually he scrambled to his feet.
"Bernie!"
In her apartment, Penny heard the noise and went out to see what was going on.
"Bernadette, what's happening?"
"I'm breaking up with Howard."
On cue, he appeared. Penny saw the little jewellery box and guessed what had happened. Howard didn't try and grab Bernadette, but he tried pleading with her. Nothing worked. She was adamant. She left, leaving her now ex-boyfriend, holding th engagement ring, looking at where she had been, forlornly.
