Having More
by Maaya

They have that sort of relationship that doesn't signify anything but comradeship-leaning-towards-friendship. Thinking back on it, Hawkeye can barely even remember how and when she and Havoc met. Why is obvious--Mustang has loyal followers and he brings them together. It's that simple. They had probably seen each other more than once around the headquarter, saluted, had eye-contact before they had spoken a word to each other. The military is like that.

But if she sits down and considers it, Hawkeye can actually remember the first time they met each other.

It's not a clear memory or a cherished one, containing rain and herself giving instructions to training privates; physical education. It's an unpleasant order of tests and training that the National Alchemists are lucky enough to miss, and both Havoc and Hawkeye experienced long ago. But they are reminded of them as they overlook and lead subordinates through them.

Havoc had been smoking, Hawkeye recalls, as they stood together under a makeshift shelter. She had overlooked the obvious breaking of a rule for that one time because they both probably needed comfort somehow. It was wet and they both wanted this day to be over so that they could go home. Hawkeye had merely been somewhat envious of the man beside her who had found comfort in something, contrary to herself. Not quite like her to ignore the rules—after the tenth cigarette, she had grown tired of it.

"Lieutenant," Hawkeye had said with a stern voice, giving him a look. "I think that is enough."

Havoc had looked at her with humorous dullness, shrugged it off and let go of the cigarette, grinding it against the asphalt with the sole of his boot. "Yes ma'am."

And then they had waited out the day together, in strict silence and a little more companionship.

Several months later, they would meet again as Havoc was reassigned to Mustang's squad. They had recognized each other then, probably, not knowing from where but it broke down the barrier that would otherwise make their relationship purely professional.
