This One Shot Takes Place about 7 months after Meredith and Derek had the argument at the Nurses station before Beth's surgery. Beth died and Meredith and Derek never spoke to Each other. Meredith had transferred to another hospital to work. In my world there wasn't a time lap between episode 4.11 and 4.12
Derek stood in the back of the cemetery. Everybody was dressed in black. Her death had been unexpected, so sudden. It was a bad car crash. Her car had been hit by a drunk Driver going at her car full speed causing her car to flip over the bridge and into the rocky shore of Elliot Bay. It was a tragic accident.
Flashback
"I don't want to work or speak to you ever again. This thing between us is over" He said storming off leaving her speechless and hurt.
End of Flashback
The scene played over and over again through his mind as the burial service began at the cemetery. Things would have been so different had he knew; had he knew that she was carrying their son, their perfect innocent son that was a part of him, and a part of her. He never got a chance to see the world. The son that Derek would never meet, the son that Derek never knew existed.
She should have told me
You made it clear you didn't want to see her again
The voices in Derek's head argued.
Had he known, things would have been different. They could be having a son together. Sure he was with Rose but he would be the father that taught his son to throw a football or kick a soccer ball. Had he known, they both might still be alive. She wouldn't have been driving home from Seattle Presbyterian, on the bridge that took her life and the life of their son. Had he known. Tears began to form in Derek's eyes. He cried for the loss of time and love. He cried for his son and the woman that held his heart. Soon everybody left once the service was over. Derek walked closer to the burial site the tears becoming heavier the closer he came. He sat on the ground in his suit and grazed his fingers over the large tomb stone. He grazed his fingers over her name and took the flowers from his right hand and placed them n the ground by her tomb stone. Lavender flowers, he inhaled the scent and was brought back to the loving memories from when they were together and happy. Before the Ferryboat Accident, Before Addison, Before all of it.
"I never stopped loving you. Never. You were it for me and I let you go. I never for a moment stopped loving you. You are the love of my life and nothing will change that. It should have been me, not you. You had a great life ahead of you. You would have been a brilliant surgeon, a great mother and a lovely wife for that one lucky man you would have married. It should have been me. I drove you away but I never ever did I stop loving you" Derek whispered letting his fingers trace her name on the tomb stone. He looked at the smaller tomb stone next to hers and let his had graze over it to. He took the rattle in his pocket and laid it on the tomb. It was a special rattle. Derek's father got it from his grandfather and Derek got it from his father. It was a Shepherd's Rattle made by his greaut grandfather. Each generation it was passed down to the first born son. Derek looked at both of the tombs and cried for all that he had lost.
No woman could ever replace her, no Rose, not anybody and nobody could every take the place of his lost son. Nobody.
