A Sad Ending For a Sad Story

Normal PoV

Once upon a time, Naruto was a little Konoha-nin that the village didn't like. That everyone but a few selected hated with a burning passion.

Once upon a time, Naruto was also a determined Konoha-nin that the village learned to love. That everyone was so grateful for and aspired to be like.

And it was also once upon a time, that Naruto was hailed the strongest ninja in all the villages, and the entire Elemental Nations. Naruto was the Kage of Konohagakure, and the people depended on him to keep the village safe and everything in order.

But that was only once upon a time.

Naruto couldn't really say when everything started to fall apart. It could have been since the end of the Fourth Shinobi War, or maybe during the Chunin Exams. Maybe during around the time when Konoha was created, or even during the time of the Rikudo Sennin.

He was simply not sure anymore.

To him, everything started to fall apart when his and Hinata's third child was born twelve years after their first one.

Do not misunderstand. Naruto loved to death his three children and he also loved Hinata like had never loved any other woman.

But that was the problem.

Naruto sometimes wondered if noticing Hinata earlier would have changed things between them.

Himawari, Naruto and Hinata's second child and oldest daughter, had been insisting that she wanted a little sibling so she could be as amazing as Boruto, their first child, had been to her. Naruto and Hinata had been more than reluctant because they had come to an agreement when Himawari was born. Hinata had realized that she didn't want to spend the rest of her life with Naruto, and started developing feelings towards her former teammate that was now an Academy teacher, Shino. It hadn't really been a surprise to anyone, Naruto had long saw it coming, but had held on the hope that Hinata would choose him in the end.

That didn't happen.

The only reason they continued 'together' was because Hinata had been in her last month of pregnancy, and they didn't wanted Boruto to question why his mommy and daddy weren't spending as much time together as they used to before the baby was born, and ended up hating his little sister due to their fault.

Naruto had agree to divorce Hinata once Himawari turned ten and they would mainly spent time with him unless he absolutely had to go on missions. He had even decided to leave the post of Hokage by then and give it to Konohamaru.

But another baby... It would change everything.

Naruto had flat out refused the request, trying to shoot down his daughter as delicately as he possibly could. He didn't want to prolong Hinata's stay with them unless it was absolutely necessary. It wouldn't be fair for her. Naruto wanted her to be happy, and he knew that she wouldn't be if she stayed by his side.

He was absolutely baffled when Hinata said yes.

They went in search of Sakura and Tsunade, because everyone that was close to Naruto and Hinata knew about them, in order to help impregnate Hinata without him actually sleeping with her. That wouldn't be fair, to neither of them.

Akari, their second and youngest daughter, was born nine months later, and unlike Boruto and Himawari, she had inherited the fiery red hair of her grandmother Kushina, and the Byakugan from Hinata's side of the family.

Akari little by little became the little treasure of the family, everyone was so focused on her no one ever noticed how Hinata was pulling away from the family.

Except Naruto.

Because Naruto was always looking at her. Always.

Naruto would have liked to say it came as a surprise to him when the day of Himawari's tenth birthday Hinata was already packed and ready to leave when he came down to the kitchen that morning. Naruto knew that Boruto and Himawari were well aware of the arrangement between their mother and him, so they weren't really surprised either. More hurt than anything, especially Himawari since Hinata didn't even want to bother staying for her birthday party.

Naruto wondered when she became so cold towards her own children.

Little Aka-chan was different than her siblings. She hadn't grown up with her mother's love, like her older siblings. She had only ever known the love of her father, older siblings, and family friends.

But never her own mother's.

So when Hinata left, no one was surprised.

What did surprise everyone was that Hinata did not left to be with Shino.

She simply disappeared. Took a long term mission and left without a backward glance.

With the pass of time, Naruto learned to live with the pain. And it was all thanks to the constant presence of his children. Without them, Naruto would have long ago given up on this sad and cruel world.

Shino also learned to live with the pain and decisions his former loved made, and he learned to love again. He found love in a nice civilian girl nearly fifteen years younger than himself. Naruto wanted to be angry with the bug user, but he couldn't find it in himself to do so when he saw just how happy Shino looked besides his then fiancée. Not to mention he had told Naruto not long after Hinata left, that the woman they both had fallen for had visited then the day before Himawari's birthday and told him she could not be with him and would never be.

In the end, it was Hinata the one that had given up on them, not the other way around.

It was six years after Hinata left that Konoha first heard of 'The Lady In White.' It sounded absolutely ridiculous to Naruto, but he had simply shrugged his shoulders. If this person wanted to be called that, then Naruto had no right to say otherwise.

Another thing that had changed, or actually hadn't, had been Naruto being the Hokage. He had been ready to give up his position, and Konohamaru had been ready, if not a little reluctant, to take the seat, but Boruto, Himawari, and even little Aka-chan had talked him out of it.

Not to mention the hundreds of letters he received from Sasuke and Sakura's second child and only daughter to date Sarada, as well as his number one fan, begging him not to give up his post as the Hokage.

So he remained the leader, and vowed to protect his people.

Yet things went to the drain real soon.

He had sent Himawari and her team alongside other to their first C rank mission. An escort mission much like his own, and hopefully it wouldn't end like that one.

Only one person came back, and it wasn't his daughter.

From then on, things got worse. Ninjas and civilians who left the village were attacked alike, and most of the time did not survive. This attacks did not involved Konoha only, but also the other major villages, and they had no choice but to arrange a meeting between the five Kages in a secret location, and away from the villages.

Naruto had decided to go alone, not wanting to risk the safety of the village, and made it safely to the meeting and back.

Only to find the village in ruins.

Everything was on fire and Naruto couldn't help but remembering Pain's invasion and the Fourth Shinobi war. He had been quick to look for any survivors, but she could find none. It was only when he was preparing to leave when he found some.

Uchiha Sarada, Akimichi Chouchou, and Uzumaki Akari.

The three girls had been asked to give something to Sasuke, who had been outside of the village when the attack happened. Sasuke had been quick to return to the village but left the girls behind with orders of telling Naruto what had happened as soon as he returned.

A part of him was glad that at least one of his children was okay, as well as the daughters of some of his friends, yet he couldn't help but feel incredibly guilty. If only he had stayed maybe everyone would still be alive.

Naruto had wanted to break down and cry for all he was worth, but he zip it up and took the girl to Suna so that they could be safe.

Instead, they found a village in flames, much like Konoha had been when he arrived. When they left for Kumo they found the same thing, and so on with the rest of the villages.

They were alone.
