Illusion: A Fanfic by Gyppy

Timeline: Based 3 years after Tales of Symphonia

Summary: He thought true love was an illusion, nothing but a fantasy borne from an overzealous imagination. Ever since that day, he'd always thought that way... until he met her.

Pairings: Kraine

Author's Note: This is based in a different timeline from "Moving On", even though it has the same pairing. And yes, Kratos comes back to Symphonia... again. I have a tendency to do that in my fics.

Disclaimer: I do not own Tales of Symphonia or Namco.

His auburn hair blew softly in the breeze as his piercing brown eyes gazed upon the city below. The city of ruins, one she had always loved... it was the city of Asgard, which he was visiting for more reasons than one.

Somewhere in that city, there was a person by the name of Raine Sage. He was looking for her, desiring to be with her, even after all the events that had happened in his past life...

He thought true love was an illusion... nothing but a fantasy borne from an overzealous imagination. He had wanted to live a normal life after those four thousand years of loneliness, but he was simply chased by the Desians, who considered him a traitor. His lover, Anna, and their son, Lloyd, had traveled from place to place in Sylvarant, but eventually his arch-rival caught up with them, and forced him to strike down Anna... to kill her with his very own hands.

Ever since that day, he'd always thought that way... that love was an illusion, and there was no such thing in the real world, that love only existed in the fantasy world of one's mind. He believed that he would never find love again, if it did indeed exist...

Until he met her.

His name was Kratos Aurion, the angel of Cruxis, the father, the lover, the traitor. And as soon as his eyes settled upon that half-elf, he realized that perhaps true love wasn't a fantasy...

"Kratos, I thought you'd gone to Derris-Kharlan," the half-elven teacher said, smiling as she brought her blue eyes upon his form.

"I did," Kratos said, feeling unnerved. "I came back... to tell you something."

"I see," Raine said. "What is this thing you wish to tell me?"

"I thought love was an illusion," Kratos said, turning his gaze upon the endless blue sky above. "However... it seems to me that illusions may be real." He turned his gaze back upon Raine, his eyes glinting beautifully, held against the sunlight. "I... think I may... just love you."

"That's nothing to be ashamed of," Raine said. "As a matter of fact... I've always wished to tell you the same thing."

"Thank you," Kratos said, after a brief period of silence. "Perhaps we can build the normal life I always desired... together."

"As you wish," Raine said, moving closer to him. "It seems odd of you to just fall in love like that, but... then again, I can't say I've done the same myself."

"I know," Kratos said, softly taking her hand. "But... it seems so natural being with you... around you..."

Almost involuntarily their lips met, leaving the whole of Asgard to gape upon the scene before them. The two quickly parted, however, and continued some quiet conversation for a while.

"And we will always love one another, always... until the day we die..."

Author's Note: I know, massive OOCness in this fic, but it's hard to write in-character with Kratos. Heheh.
