Title: Symptoms

Rating: K

Spoilers: none

Pairings/Characters: Nick, Kevin

Summary: Pure Horace Mantis Challenge # 4. Nick knows even the littlest sign that he's off.

Disclaimer: Still not owning Disney, JONAS, the characters and/or the music. Wow, I'd be really talented if I could even come up with a script for the show. (And lucky.)

Author's Notes: I wanted to keep with the light-hearted, because it's been so much fun. But I realize the last story wasn't completely so. So I thought why not when I saw the options and got some interesting ideas. And I think I managed a unique take on the phrase "Blood is thicker than water." I won't give it away here, but if you have questions I'll explain them later. I also realize it's very short, but I felt it didn't need a lot of embellishment. So I hope you like it.

Blood is thicker than water.

It was interesting, how over time, how well Nick learned to read even the littlest (even insignificant some might think) signs of him being off.

Even though everyone thought he only had one mood – serious – that wasn't the case. He could joke and laugh with his brothers. He appreciated their light-heartedness – unless he was in the middle of writing a new song or finishing his homework. But that was because he needed to focus. When he got an idea in his head he needed to write it down immediately, afraid that it would leave him before he could expand it and creates something new. And he experienced sadness, anxiety, anger and fear. But overall he was an easy going guy.

So he knew when he became short-tempered his blood sugar was high. And if he felt shaky or unsteady it was low.

But sometimes those signs were so small and subtle that he missed them.

So when he pricked his finger before breakfast and noticed the almost watery quality to his blood he knew he would get a low reading.

Kevin squeezed his shoulder as he glanced at the thin droplet of blood. Then he moved to the refrigerator and poured a glass of orange juice, setting it before Nick.

Nick realized he wasn't the only one who noticed even the small signs as he gave his oldest brother a grateful smile.
